Job Summary
The Executive Director of Special Education / SELPA provides leadership, coordination, and administrative oversight for NUSD’s Special Education programs and SELPA operations. This position supports the development, implementation, and continuous improvement of a comprehensive system of services that ensures equitable access, legal compliance, and high-quality educational opportunities for students with disabilities. Serving as the District’s SELPA Director, this position oversees SELPA governance, compliance, operational systems, and interagency collaboration to ensure effective service delivery and alignment with district priorities.
Requirements / Qualifications
-Lead SELPA operations including governance implementation, interagency agreements, state reporting, budget oversight, fiscal coordination, risk management, and operational compliance. -Oversee Community Advisory Committee (CAC) for SELPA. -Support the development, implementation, and evaluation of Special Education programs, related services, and specialized supports across preschool, elementary, secondary, and transition services. -Maintain continuity, alignment, and equitable access to Special Education services and supports across all schools and programs. -Monitor compliance with federal, state, and local laws, regulations, and procedural safeguards related to Special Education, IDEA, ADA, Section 504, and SELPA governance. -Coordinate systems for IEP implementation, program monitoring, compliance review, corrective actions, and service delivery effectiveness. -Oversee the selection, implementation, and monitoring of curriculum, instructional materials, therapeutic resources, specialized equipment, and assistive technologies for students with disabilities. -Plan, develop, and coordinate training for administrators, certificated staff, classified staff, and service providers related to Special Education law, compliance, instructional strategies, inclusion, and behavior intervention. -Serve as liaison to state and county agencies, SELPA partners, community organizations, and related service providers to ensure collaboration and coordinated support systems. -Collaborate with Cabinet-level leaders, site administrators, and district departments to align Special Education services with district instructional priorities and student outcome goals. -Support resolution of complex student cases, compliance concerns, and programmatic challenges through collaboration, problem-solving, and systems coordination. -Supervise, support, and evaluate assigned Special Education and SELPA personnel as designated.

EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE:
Any combination of experience and training that would likely provide the required knowledge and abilities could qualify someone for this position. A typical way to obtain the knowledge and abilities would be:
Education: Equivalent to a master’s degree from an accredited college or university in education, educational leadership/administration, special education, public administration, or a closely related field.
Experience: Five (5) years of progressively responsible experience in Special Education, SELPA, or a related educational support services field, including at least two (2) years in a leadership or administrative role (such as principal, director, program administrator, SELPA administrator, or equivalent).
LICENSES AND CERTIFICATES
Valid California driver’s license required
Valid California Teaching Credential required
Valid California Administrative Credential required
