Job Summary
The Middle School AVID Elective/Leadership Teacher is responsible for implementing the Advancement Via Individual Determination (AVID) curriculum and fostering a college- and career-ready mindset among students while also leading student leadership initiatives that promote school culture, student voice, and community engagement. This teacher supports students in developing organizational, academic, communication, and leadership skills necessary for success in middle school, high school, college, and beyond.
Requirements / Qualifications
Essential Duties and Responsibilities: AVID Instruction & Student Support Teach the AVID elective course aligned with AVID methodologies and curriculum. Implement instructional strategies focused on writing, inquiry, collaboration, organization, and reading (WICOR). Support students in developing note-taking, time management, goal-setting, and study skills. Facilitate tutorials and collaborative learning activities. Monitor student academic progress, attendance, and engagement. Build strong relationships with students and families to support academic and social-emotional growth. Coordinate college and career exploration activities, including guest speakers, field trips, and awareness events. Leadership Program Responsibilities Teach leadership principles, event planning, and student government processes. Advise student leadership groups, clubs, and associated student body activities. Coordinate school events such as assemblies, spirit weeks, dances, service projects, and recognition programs. Promote positive school culture, inclusion, and student engagement. Support student-led initiatives that encourage school connectedness and community service. Program Coordination & Collaboration Serve as site AVID coordinator or collaborate closely with site/district AVID teams, as assigned. Attend AVID trainings, professional development, and required certification opportunities. Collaborate with counselors, administrators, teachers, and families to ensure student success. Maintain required AVID documentation, student data, and program records. Assist with school-wide initiatives that align with college readiness, character education, and leadership development.
Qualifications: Valid teaching credential appropriate for middle school instruction. Experience teaching middle school students preferred. Knowledge of AVID strategies, WICOR instructional framework, and college/career readiness practices preferred. Experience advising student leadership, clubs, or extracurricular programs preferred. Strong organizational, communication, and relationship-building skills. Ability to motivate and engage diverse learners. Bachelor's degree from an accredited college or university. Possession of a valid Single Subject credential preferred with English Learner Authorization issued by the California Commission on Teacher Credentialing. ** To be considered for hire, candidates must meet the minimum requirements including a successful interview and reference checks.
