TLC IS A K-12 PUBLIC HYBRID HOMESCHOOL We incorporate both school and parent involvement in educating students. Families can choose between a 100% homeschool program, or a hybrid program, with 3 days at school and 2 days at home. Teachers and staff are required to report onsite five days per week. OUR MISSION To empower students to reach their full potential by providing choice in education within collaborative triads of parents, students, and school. OUR HISTORY In May 2004, the San Diego Unified School District approved The Learning Choice Academy and authorized it to serve students in grades K–12. Currently, TLC has charters for all three school sites with sponsors from local districts including Chula Vista Elementary School District, Grossmont Union High School District, and San Diego Unified School District.

Under the supervision of the school site administrator, the educator: - reports onsite and maintains a Monday–Friday schedule totaling 40 hours per week - provides an educational program for pupils in 6th grade and assists in other school programs as assigned - creates a flexible program and a class environment favorable to learning and personal growth -establishes effective rapport with students to motivate students to develop skills, attitudes, and knowledge needed to provide a good foundation for further participation in the total school program, in accordance with each student’s ability, and to meet the California State Standards -establishes good relationships with parents and other staff members -supervises instructional aides, student teachers, and parent volunteers when applicable

Duties:

Candidate must possess exceptional skills and knowledge in the California Common Core Standards Mathematics

Be responsible for creating an effective learning environment that develops in each student the knowledge and skills needed to be prepared for mathematics in college, career, and life

Be a positive role model and instructor with the ability to evolve the math program. Develops lesson plans and supplementary materials that stimulates inquiry, self-expression, and individual growth.

Provides individualized and small group instruction in order to adapt the curriculum to the needs of each student and subgroups of students and accommodate circumstances where a variety of projects and experiments are being worked on simultaneously

Prepares progress reports, report cards and evaluates academic and social growth of students. Establishes and maintains standards and expectations of student behavior for a productive learning environment. Promotes a learning environment that is conducive to the growth of student responsibility and self-control

Communicates with parents and staff on progress, growth, areas of improvement. Identifies pupil needs and consults with other professional staff in assessing and helping

Practices professional competence by attending staff development programs, subject team meetings and other professional learning opportunities

Performs any other related duties as assigned 

The Independent Study teacher AKA Educational Partner position requires overseeing a roster of students at various grade levels, collecting work samples across all subjects, and completing student portfolios every six weeks, meeting with parent and student every six weeks to discuss progress, completing semester report cards, and other duties as assigned

Knowlede of:

Understanding of appropriate behavior management techniques

Fluency in English and academic level vocabulary and syntax expertise

Fluency in Spanish preferred
Methods for effective cooperation with all stake holders, including interpersonal skills using honesty, patience, respect and courtesy

Ability to:

Establish and maintain effective relationships with students, parents, and school staff

Communicate constructively and positively

Be dependable and punctual

Demonstrate an understanding, patient, friendly, and receptive attitude toward students

The Independent Study teacher AKA Educational Partner (EP) position requires face-to-face contact with students and parents at least once every 20-30 school attendance days up to one hour per student each time. Meetings are held at the TLC Resource Center. 

EPs will be expected to be effective in the following skills:

 Varied assignments to meet learning styles
 Risk-free environment - provide positive feedback and allow choice 
Encourage the use of higher order thinking skills and learning concepts as well as basic facts 
Utilize hands-on approaches 
Provide for in-depth understanding 
Accessible for all learners 
 Utilize various modes of communication 
 Students have ownership of their learning within the curriculum 
 Projects promote meaningful learning, connecting new learning to students' past experiences
 The learning process is valued as well as the learning project 
 Learning is multidisciplinary in nature 
 Teacher is a facilitator of learning 
 Student self-assessment of learning is expected and encouraged 

Responsibilities include but are not limited to: 
 Completing required paperwork and documentation ie: Master Agreement, Attendance Sheets, Learning Records, Report Cards, and Portfolios
 Advising and counseling both parents and students about educational opportunities through their school
 Communicating school information to the parents/students
 Evaluating student progress
 Keeping current with school policy and procedure
 Using computer technology
 Attending staff meetings once a month
 Travel to other TLC sites
 Attendance at School Field Trips/Field Days/Assemblies
 Proctoring state mandated tests and administering any other required tests
