Job Summary
The Alternative Education Principal serves as the instructional leader and administrator of an alternative school, overseeing all aspects of school operations, including staff supervision, student support, curriculum development, and community engagement. This role focuses on creating a positive, inclusive learning environment that meets the diverse needs of at-risk and non-traditional students, while ensuring compliance with district policies and state regulations. The Principal collaborates with staff, families, and community partners to promote student success, engagement, and post-secondary readiness.

PRINCIPAL, ALTERNATIVE SCHOOL
Primary Function
Serves as the educational leader of the school; is responsible for the organization and administration of the school; serves as direct liaison to the community and central administration and with other educational and social agencies.
Directly Responsible to
Director, Adult and Continuing Education.
Supervision
Shall supervise and evaluate the activities of certificated and classified personnel as assigned.
Major Responsibilities
1. Manages business affairs of the school.
2. Provides leadership that results in establishing common goals for school staff, parents, and students.
3. Interprets and enforces laws, rules, and regulations as they relate to school.
4. Coordinates pupil guidance services of the school and the extracurricular program.
5. Participates in community activities and district-wide activities.
6. Schedules and assigns teachers and students.
7. Develops curriculum.
8. Determines school policy in areas of staff, faculty, administration, and school operation.
9. Supervises public relations program of the school.
10. Responsible for in-service training and evaluation of certificated and classified personnel.
11. Recommends hiring, retention, or transfer of certificated and classified personnel.
12. Handles special attendance, discipline, and counseling cases.
13. Coordinates all types of specialized central services provided for the school.
14. Provides an atmosphere conductive to teaching and learning.
15. Delegates the details of his/her administrative responsibilities, which will facilitate the successful operation of the school.
16. Manages other programs as assigned.
17. Performs other duties as assigned.
Qualifications
Knowledge and Skills:
1. Ability to exhibit leadership skills.
2. Ability to communicate effectively with all segments of the school community.
3. Knowledge of the broad spectrum of curriculum for both traditional and alternative schools.
4. Knowledge of all aspects of the operation of a secondary school.
5. Ability to be sensitive to the individual needs of students in alternative education programs.
6. Knowledge of the community and its resources.
7. Ability to evaluate and supervise subordinate personnel.
8. Ability to speak and write effectively.
9. Ability to work effectively with all segments of the educational community and the general public.
10. Ability to work effectively with at-risk students.
Education, Training, and Experience:
1. Post graduate work in school administration or curriculum and instruction, or a comparable combination of training and experience.
2. Shall hold an appropriate school administration credential.
3. Classroom teaching experience.
4. Experience in school administration.
