GROUNDS PERSON/BUS DRIVER
DESCRIPTION OF POSITION
Under the general supervision of the Director of Facilities & Operations or designee. To perform routine grounds maintenance and gardening at school site; and to assist in a variety of constructional projects as required. Drive school bus on assigned routes or for field trips may be required.
EXAMPLES OF DUTIES-MAJOR RESPONSIBILTIES
Prepare ground for planting; plant, replant, fertilize, water, trim and prune shrubs, trees, flowers and lawns; rake leaves for planter areas. Mow and water lawns; weed lawn areas; edge sidewalk areas. Power blow sidewalks, basketball courts and other walkway areas after mowing lawns. Mix and apply herbicides, pesticides and sprays over planted areas in accordance with state law. Operate chainsaw, cut fallen trees and limbs. Clean and maintain grounds; pick up trash on school campus, pick up broken glass and debris around campus. Line athletic fields and track; reseed, fertilize and restore playing fields after sports events and activities. Maintain all tools and equipment; clean, grease and adjust equipment as needed. Repair minor sprinkler problems such as replacing sprinkler heads and repairing broken water lines. Operate sweeper to clean parking lots and blacktop areas; repair blacktop areas as needed; refill holes and cavities. Mix, apply and cut cement as needed. Operate cherry picker as needed to install goal posts and prune trees. Operate heavy machinery pertaining to special projects as required. Perform related duties as assigned.
PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS-Incorporated within one or more of the essential functions of this position are the following essential physical requirements. Ability to see for the purposes of reading instructions, labels and other printed matter. Ability to understand speech at normal levels in person or on the telephone. Ability to communicate so others will be able to clearly understand a normal conversation in person or on the telephone. Ability to operate hand-held tools and grounds maintenance equipment, as well as heavy power driven equipment and District vehicles, with dexterity. Ability to routinely lift/carry equipment and supplies weighing up to 40 pounds and to occasionally lift/carry equipment and supplies weighing up to 75 pounds.
WORKING CONDITIONS
Outdoor working environment subject to bending, crawling, crouching, kneeling at ground level, pushing/pulling of grounds equipment and tools, reaching in all directions, long periods of standing/walking and, with appropriate safety equipment, working with asbestos-containing materials/equipment , herbicides, pesticides, and other chemicals.
EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE
Knowledge of:
Principles, procedures and methods used in caring for plants, shrubs, flowers, trees and lawns. Materials and equipment used in cultivating, pruning and caring for plants, shrubs, flowers, trees, and lawns. Specialized maintenance procedures in such areas as weed control, blacktop and asphalt work and sprinkler system installation. Purposes and functions of a variety of equipment and tools used in maintenance including heavy equipment. Safe work practices.
Ability to:
Operate a variety of power driven equipment with skill and dependence. Work indenpently in absence of supervision. Understand and follow oral written instructions. Communicate clearly and concisely, both orally and in writing. Establish and maintain cooperative working relationships with those contacted in the course of work. Drive a vehicle and possess a valid California operators license. Obtain a bus drivers license. Obtain First Aid and CPR certificates.
Education:
Graduation from high school or equivalent.
Experience/Training:
Any combination of experience and training that would likely provide the required knowledge and abilities is qualifying. A typical way to obtain the knowledge and abilities would be:
A. One year of grounds maintenance experience is desirable.
B. Formal or informal education or training which ensures the ability to read and write at a level necessary for successful job performance.
Requirements / Qualifications
Day Shift 6:00AM-3:00PM/ 1 hr Lunch Class A or B License with a passenger endorsement issued by the CA DMV or ability to acquire license within 4 weeks of employment.
TB results will be required before employment Current employees: All documents must be attached if currently not on file Updated resume if in a different classification
