The St. Mary School instructional assistant is to assist, support, and work closely with teachers, Administration and other faculty/staff members in providing educational benefit for students. Instructional assistants maintain a positive, Christ-like spirit in all interactions regarding students, teachers, families, staff, and parish members. Instructional assistants are expected to contribute to a positive and effective school climate that supports academic achievement and the needs of the whole child. Instructional assistants are to assist in providing an organized classroom environment that is conducive to learning and supporting the classroom teacher in the implementation of the school’s management policies and procedures. Instructional assistants are held accountable for the safety and welfare of all students. Instructional assistants are to contribute to resolving student issues that may arise during classroom instruction, playtime or lunch. Assistants communicate all student matters needing attention to the classroom teacher.

The Instructional Assistant's primary responsibility is to the student and to support the classroom teacher. Fulfillment of this duty includes, but is not limited to:
- Assisting and supporting the classroom teacher in reinforcing instruction based on individual students’ needs, interests, and abilities.
- Working with individual students or small groups of students to reinforce learning of materials or skills initially introduced and outlined by certified staff.
- Monitoring work, correcting papers and supervising curriculum-based testing and makeup work as assigned by the classroom teacher.
- Performing clerical tasks, classroom maintenance, and instructional duties as assigned by the classroom teacher.
- Alerting the classroom teacher to any problem or special information about an individual student.
- Supervising students during recess, lunch, and out-of-classroom activities.
- Serving as classroom teacher when necessary.
- Participating in approved professional development programs.
- Maintaining a safe learning environment for all students.
