Job Summary
The primary purpose of pupil health services is to help pupils develop attitudes and follow practices which will help them to live healthful and happy lives, to assume responsibility for their own health, and to assist in determining when health problems significantly affect the children in the classroom. Specific health services are provided in areas which directly affect pupils’ ability to learn. Under the leadership and direction of the Director, Student Services and immediately responsible to the Director, Student Services and to Principals of the schools assigned.

POSITION: SCHOOL NURSE
POSITION DEFINITION: The primary purpose of pupil health services is to help pupils develop attitudes and follow practices which will help them to live healthful and happy lives, to assume responsibility for their own health, and to assist in determining when health problems significantly affect the children in the classroom. Specific health services are provided in areas which directly affect pupils' ability to learn.
RESPONSIBLE TO: Under the leadership and direction of the Director, Pupil Personnel and immediately responsible to the Director, Pupil Personnel and to principals of the schools assigned.
REPRESENTATIVE RESPONSIBILITIES:
1. Assist in the planning and development of the health education program.
2. Assumes responsibility for vision screening examinations and follow-up of pupils and reports results to parents, school personnel and appropriate agencies concerned.
3. Assumes responsibility for hearing screening examinations and follow-up of pupils and reports results to parents, school personnel and appropriate agencies concerned.
4. Works closely with other special services staff in a coordinated effort.
5. Confers with parents and other school personnel regarding students with special health needs and assists in referral to appropriate agencies.
6. Assists in case finding and referrals for students with an educational, emotional, or physical handicap.
7. As part of the required study for pupils referred for special program placement, the school nurse assumes responsibility for obtaining health and developmental history.
8. Interprets policies to school personnel and parents regarding the control of communicable diseases.
9. Maintains student health records and other appropriate reports for school files.
10. Keeps school personnel informed of health resources available in the community.
11. Is available as a resource person and consultant in areas relative to pupil and staff health problems when requested.
12. Is available as a resource person and instructor in areas relative to classroom health units.
13. Participates as a member of the Individualized Education Program Team for special programs as required.
14. Provides for and participates in appropriate inservice trainings programs.
15. Maintains professional competency through participation, inservice educational activities provided by the District and/or self-selected professional growth activities.
16. Is available for emergency consultation on pupil and staff injuries and illnesses.
17. Attends special meetings called by the Principal or Director, Pupil Personnel.
18. Shares in the sponsorship of school activities and participates in faculty committees as their schedule permits.
Requirements / Qualifications
Bilingual (Spanish) desirable B.S. Degree – Nursing Valid California Registered Nurse License Valid California School Nurse Services Credential
