Position Purpose:

To perform general cleaning and custodial functions as the night custodian at assigned school site and to maintain security of assigned school buildings, facilities and related areas.  Employees in this classification receive general supervision within a framework of well-defined policies and procedures.  Employees in this job class exercise responsibility for the general cleanliness of assigned areas within the assigned school site and perform custodial duties at the entry level.

Essential Job Duties:

The following tasks are essential for this position.  Incumbents in this classification may not perform all of these tasks, or may perform similar related tasks not listed here.

   1.     Performs general janitorial, cleaning and custodial functions at assigned school site.

   2.     Cleans classrooms, restrooms, locker rooms, gymnasiums, offices and related school facilities.

   3.     Sweeps, mops, strips, scrubs, waxes, and polishes concrete, linoleum, tile and wood floors.

   4.     Vacuums and shampoos rugs and carpets.

   5.     Dusts furniture; empties and cleans trash receptacles.

   6.     Cleans walls, furniture, windows, woodwork, chalkboards, lockers and other equipment.

   7.     Cleans door and window glass and drinking fountains.

   8.     Replaces light bulbs.

   9.     Picks up papers and debris; cleans walkways and entrances.

  1. Operates cleaning equipment such as vacuums, floor cleaning and polishing machines, scrubbers, etc.
  2. Ensures security of assigned areas; locks and unlocks doors, windows and gates; turns security alarms on/off.
  3. Assists in the set up and arrangement of furniture and facilities for assemblies, meetings, and special events upon request to include arranging chairs, desks, equipment, etc.
  4. Observes and reports the need for maintenance repairs.
  5. Maintains equipment used in custodial work.
  6. Reports safety, sanitary and fire hazards.
  7. Performs related duties as required.

 


Minimum Knowledge, Skill and Ability:

 

Knowledge of:

  • Modern cleaning methods, materials, tools and equipment.
  • Safe use and operation of equipment and chemicals used in janitorial and custodial work.

 

Skill and Ability to:

  • Read and write at a level sufficient to successfully perform required duties.
  • Understand and follow oral and written instructions.
  • Effectively communicate in both oral and written forms.
  • Safely use and apply custodial cleaning agents, equipment and materials.
  • Effectively maintain the security of assigned areas.

 

Skill and Ability to:

  • Meet the physical requirements necessary to safely and effectively perform required duties.
  • Establish and maintain effective work relationships with those contacted in the performance of required duties.

 

Training and Experience:

Any combination equivalent to training and experience that could likely provide the required knowledge, skills and abilities would be qualifying.  A typical way to obtain the knowledge, skills and abilities would be:  read and write at a level sufficient to perform required duties.

 

Physical Requirements and Working Conditions:

  • Require the mobility to stand, stoop, reach and bend.  Require mobility of arms to reach and dexterity of hands to grasp and manipulate small objects.
