JOB SUMMARY

 

We have an exciting opportunity for an Instructional Laboratory Technician II, Chemistryposition located at our campus in Menifee, CA.

 

The Instructional Laboratory Technician II, under the general supervision of the Instructional Dean of Math and Science and the direct supervision of the Director of Instructional Laboratory Operations, prepares the laboratories for class session activities in a face to face environment for the physical sciences. The incumbent responds to student questions and maintains a supportive and professional relationship with students, lead instructional laboratory technicians, and faculty. The Instructional Laboratory Technician II perform discipline-specific technical tasks.

Prepares and standardizes solutions and other laboratory materials; calibrates and

makes minor repairs and modifications to equipment; issues and replaces specialized materials used in the laboratories; organizes and maintains stockrooms; sets up and dismantles apparatus and equipment used for experiments; checks out experimental equipment for faculty; is responsible for requisitions, receives, stores, and inventories chemicals, laboratory supplies, and equipment to ensure adequate stock for laboratory experiments. Collects and stores chemical waste as required; and maintains accurate records of open accounts and budget information.

 

CONDITIONS OF EMPLOYMENT

 

• This position serves District-Wide; applicants may be assigned to any district facility. Work hours and worksite locations are subject to change depending on department needs.

 

• Initial placement on the salary schedule will be commensurate with education and experience, not to exceed step four (4) on the assigned salary schedule for new hires.

 

• A six-month probationary period must be successfully completed before the selected candidate is considered a permanent employee of the district.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

• Maintain the safety of the preparation area, laboratories, stockrooms, and classrooms

by developing good chemical hygiene habits and being alert for chemical spills and potential hazards

• Follow strict safety procedures common to the laboratory

• Knowledge of proper use of safety devices common to the laboratory

• Answer students' general questions

• Calculate the costs of materials from sources such as quotes, price lists, and

estimates.

• Procure, requisition, and receive laboratory supplies, chemicals, and equipment

• Assemble, test, install and store new equipment, instruments, and other laboratory supplies

• Assist faculty in the planning and implementation of experimental design

and preparation of laboratory exercises

• Set up various experiments and classroom demonstrations, as scheduled by faculty.

• Assist faculty with the presentation of safety hazards and laboratory procedures to students during the laboratory session

• Measure, mix, and prepare reagents, chemical solutions and other material following formulas and procedures using standard laboratory equipment, policy, and procedures.

• Prepare and use specialized equipment following laboratory procedures

• Neutralize and properly dispose of chemical waste materials according to accepted safety and environmental practice standards

• Neutralize acid-base chemical returns, precipitate out heavy metals and handle other chemical returns according to accepted safety and environmental practice standards

• Set up and dismantle experiments as required and assemble, disassemble,

clean, replace, and store apparatus and equipment used in laboratory experiments and demonstrations

• Return materials, tools, and equipment to designated area and clean up all laboratory equipment after each lab/field session

• Maintain specialized files including Safety Data Sheets (SDS) and computerized inventory and storage location of chemicals

• Perform routine maintenance and minor repairs on lab equipment

• Notify appropriate personnel of needed repairs, maintenance or any hazardous

conditions that exist in the laboratories via submission of work orders

• Keep current on matters concerning safety, hazardous materials management and chemical waste disposal and implement procedures to comply with federal, state, and local laws and regulations for academic institutions

• Assist faculty with monitoring exams, quizzes, and lab practicals.

• Assist Faculty with audio/visual Presentations.

• May attend District approved field trips and assist instructor as needed.

• May assist with transporting students to District approved field trips using District vehicle.

• Maintain a friendly, supportive atmosphere for students, staff, faculty, and the public.

• Perform other duties as appropriate to the classification as assigned by the department supervisor.

 

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES

 

The incumbent should possess knowledge of:

 

• Physical Sciences laboratory procedures and equipment for chemistry, physics,

astronomy, electronics, geology and technical sciences

• Student educational processes and needs specific to an instructional program

(discipline) computer programs and software, and instructional support materials

• Principles and practices of hazardous materials management, health and safety and

hazardous waste disposal

• Sensitivity to the general needs of students, faculty, staff, and community from various ethnic, racial, and cultural backgrounds

 

The incumbent should possess skills in:

 

• Assisting students in understanding and applying the principles of physical sciences

• Working effectively as a team member

• Communicating effectively both orally and in writing

• Maintaining inventories, documentation, and records

• Time management, organization, and prioritization

 

The incumbent should possess the ability to:

 

• Remain current in technical knowledge for the field of specialty

• Plan, prioritize and organize work

• Perform individual and small group tasks

• Establish and maintain cooperative and effective working relationships with others, including those from a diverse academic, socioeconomic, cultural, disability, gender identity, sexual orientation, and ethnic backgrounds of students, faculty, staff and community.

 

QUALIFICATIONS AND REQUIREMENTS

 

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

 

• An Associate of Science degree in Physical Sciences or related field (attach transcripts); AND

• With a minimum of sixteen (16) semester units of college-level coursework in Physical Sciences including lab coursework; AND

• Two (2) Year experience working in an educational or research laboratory setting; AND

• Demonstrated sensitivity to and understanding of the diverse academic, socioeconomic, cultural, disability gender identity, sexual orientation, and ethnic backgrounds of community college students, faculty and staff

DESIRED QUALIFICATIONS

 

Note: Qualifications are dependent on the specific option (physical or life science, to which assigned and vary depending on assignment.

 

• A Bachelor's of Science Degree in Physical Sciences or a related field

• Or Three (3) years of professional experience in a science laboratory and knowledge of proper protocols when working with hazardous chemicals

• A valid California driver's license

 

SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS

 

• Possession of, or the ability to obtain within 60-days of hire, a valid California driver's license with a driving record acceptable to the district. Must maintain a driving record that meets District requirements set forth in the current policy as it relates to allowable types of infractions and points.

• Prior to access to District vehicles, must complete successful enrollment in the District's Direct Pull program with the DMV

• Be comfortable working in a normal laboratory and office setting.

• Be able to lift 30lbs

PHYSICAL DEMANDS AND WORKING ENVIRONMENT

Physical: Primary function requires sufficient physical ability and mobility to work in a laboratory or classroom; to stand or sit for prolonged periods of time; to occasionally stoop, bend, kneel, crouch, reach and twist; to lift carry, push, and/or pull light to moderate amounts of weight up to 30 pounds; to operate office equipment requiring repetitive hand movements and fine coordination including use of a computer keyboard; and to verbally communicate to exchange information.

 

Vision: See in the normal visual range with or without correction; vision sufficient to read computer screens and printed documents; and to operate assigned equipment.

 

Hearing: Hear in the normal audio range with or without correction.
