THE IDEAL CANDIDATE Individuals in these positions work with students in middle and high school. AVID tutors serve as excellent role models of motivated, organized, successful college students who believe that AVID students can and will succeed. They must be enrolled in college or university and should represent balanced academic backgrounds, some liberal arts majors, others science or mathematics majors. The tutors are people who work in a supportive manner with secondary students and are able to understand the delicate position they occupy. They are advocates of students, yet ultimately they are responsible to the teacher. They must be willing to meet regularly to discuss student progress and to confer with the teacher about future plans. Positions in this classification are temporary part-time. Hours vary but are no more than 20 hours per week.

Requirements / Qualifications

All candidates must meet the state Every Student Succeeds Act (ESSA) requirement for this position. This can be met one of three ways: 1. Possession of an associate's degree or higher 2. Completion of at least 48 full semester units at an accredited college or university 3. Taking and passing the ESSA exam administered by Downey Unified School District If you meet the ESSA requirement through possession of the associate's degree or higher or have completed at least 48 full semester units, please attach a copy of your degree or college level transcripts to your application.
