Essential Functions & Qualifications

 

The Nursing and Allied Health Division at Cuesta College is seeking a Full-Time, Tenure-Track Licensed Vocational Nursing/Certified Nursing Assistant Instructor to teach theory, skills lab, and clinical courses in acute care and long-term care settings. The successful candidate will teach in both the LVN and CNA programs and will assume the full range of responsibilities of full-time faculty, including teaching, curriculum development, student evaluation, program development, and participation in college governance, accreditation, and professional development activities.

 

Theory and skills lab instruction will be based at the North County Campus. Clinical instruction will occur at approved clinical sites, which may be located throughout San Luis Obispo County.

 

Graduates of these programs are eligible to take the NCLEX-PN, leading to licensure as a Vocational Nurse, or the California Nurse Aide Competency Evaluation (NNAAP), leading to certification as a Nursing Assistant. Both programs have strong exam pass rates. Classroom instruction incorporates a simulation lab and modern instructional technology. The programs emphasize hands-on patient care, strong teamwork, and interprofessional collaboration. The majority of clinical instruction occurs in long-term care facilities with a focus on geriatric patient populations.

Appropriate evidence for the candidate includes, but is not limited to, experience, training, or achievement:

 

• Commitment staying up-to-date with the latest developments in nursing and nursing education and in collaboration with industry and/or professional organizations;

• Ability to continuously reflect, evaluate, and improve teaching methods;

• Ability to organize and explain materials/instructions in an appropriate manner to address students' abilities and learning styles;

• Ability to use teaching methods that engage students actively in their own learning,

promote development of critical thinking and clinical reasoning skills and encourages

students to become lifelong learners;

• Ability to use instructional methods that emphasize cultural sensitivity;

• Ability to motivate students from a broad spectrum of cultural, academic, socioeconomic, and language backgrounds;

• Ability to develop and assess student learning outcomes, as well as identifying methods for achievement of those outcomes.

-Any Bachelor's degree from an accredited institution and two years of professional experience directly related to the teaching assignment;

 

OR

 

-Any Associate's degree from an accredited institution and six years of professional experience directly related to the teaching assignment;

 

OR

 

-The equivalent. (Candidates applying on the basis of equivalency must submit all materials requested for an equivalency judgment. Interview Process Information

 

Selected applicants will be invited to give a teaching demonstration, and an interview on Thursday, April 23, 2026.

 

First Interviews will be held in person or via Zoom by candidate request. In person interviews are preferred and, in the interest of equity, candidates will be reimbursed up to $500 toward their travel expenses if they choose to interview on campus. Virtual teaching and lab demonstrations will be evaluated using the same criteria as in-person demonstrations and will be expected to facilitate similar levels of effectiveness, skill, engagement and interaction.

 

Second interviews will be held via Zoom on Thursday, April 30, 2026.

 

The selected applicant will begin their full-time teaching assignment in the Fall semester of the 2026-2027 school year, which begins on Monday, August 17, 2026.
