Job Description and Duties Individuals who are eligible for a Training and Development assignment may also be considered for this position(s). Under the general supervision of the Principal and the direct supervision of the Supervisor of Academic Instruction (SAI), the Academic Teacher, CF (teacher) implements the California Department of Education (CDE) Adult School learning goals and objectives. Based on the incarcerated students’ learning needs, assessment results from the Test of Adult Basic Education (TABE), the Comprehensive Adult Student Assessment System (CASAS), and other educational assessment tools and documents, the teacher will develop lesson plans, assign coursework and provide a course of study based on the specific academic program. The teacher will provide services using several delivery methods (based on individual student needs) such as one-on-one, and/or small group instruction, and/or large group instruction on a pull-out basis. The teacher is required to maintain direct student contact related to the necessary amount of time based on student learning needs and group activities. The teacher will provide guidance to paraprofessional Teaching Assistants (TAs), Incarcerated Person(s) Student Aides, Incarcerated Person(s)-Clerks and Incarcerated Person(s) Tutors. The teacher will be fully aware of the institutional mission and services. The teacher will maintain personal safety by wearing a Personal Alarm Device or by other department sanctioned means.

CDCR’s Office of Correctional Education is seeking credentialed teachers to prepare adult inmates for high school equivalency or diploma. Come be part of CDCR’s effort to improve public safety by preparing inmates for successful community reentry.

Academic Programs

Adult Basic Education (ABE) I, II and III provides incarcerated inmates/students opportunities for acquiring academic skills through an emphasis in English. Language Arts and Mathematics. General Education Development (GED) provides instruction in English/Language Arts, Mathematical Reasoning, Science and Social Studies to prepare offenders to take a high school equivalency exam. The High School Diploma (HD) Program is designed to provide offenders with an opportunity to fulfill current graduation requirements for the State of California, Department of Education, and secure a High School Diploma. The Voluntary Education Program includes literacy, adult secondary education, library literacy, television (eLearning) programs, and/or college (via face-to-face classes or correspondence)

 

Requirements / Qualifications

Minimum Qualifications Teacher All applicants must possess a valid California Teaching Credential issued by the Commission on Teacher Credentialing. Applicants who do not possess the required credential or one of equivalent authorization may take the examinations but must have on file with the Commission on Teacher Credentialing an application for an appropriate credential. At the time of application for the examination, applicants must present written verification that the appropriate listed credential or its' equivalent is being processed or will be authorized.

Possession of Minimum Qualifications will be verified prior to interview and/or appointment. If you are meeting Minimum Qualifications with education, you should include your unofficial transcripts/diploma for verification. Official transcripts may be required upon appointment. If it is determined an applicant does not meet the Minimum Qualifications, the candidate will be withheld from the eligibility list, rendering them inactive and ineligible to be hired for the position. Candidates who have been withheld may file an appeal with the State Personnel Board.
