Learn more about our Head Start Department Madera Head Start Preschool serves children 3 to 5 years of age in Madera County. The program is center-based program with full-day and part-day options. The program services begin in August through May of each year. Madera and Fresno Head Start (Ag) Program serves children 6 weeks old to 5 years old that live in Madera County. The program has two seasons, traditional and winter. The traditional program runs from May to end of October and the winter program runs from early-November to February. Hours of service are between 8 to 10 hours per day. Early Head Start is a home-based program created to teach parents how to become their child’s first teacher. The program serves 0 – 3 years old including pregnant mothers. The Family Facilitator visits the home once a week for an hour and a half. Socialization is held twice a month where parents bring their children to interact and participate in activities provided by Family Facilitators. Early Head Start is an all year round program.

JOB OVERVIEW: This position is responsible for performing the necessary duties to assist in the implementation of a developmentally appropriate practices for infants, toddlers, or preschool children that meets the Head Start Performance Standards, and complies with Community Care Licensing Regulations
CHILD DEVELOPMENT / HEALTH SERVICES
- Checks environment to provide a safe place for childhood experiences in social contact and competence to occur.
- Assists in maintaining a healthy, safe, and clean environment.
- Assists teachers in helping children in improve skills all developmental areas.
- Assists teachers in collecting observation and recording of children’s growth and development and collaborates with teachers to develop individualized plans for every child.
- Supports teaching staff on implementing program’s curriculum to fidelity.
- Contributes to curriculum planning and implementation.
- Accompanies teachers on home visits, if necessary.
- Acts as a language model for children.
- Provides positive interaction with children.
- Provides feedback to children to encourage children to take risks to try new ideas.
- Responsible for completing daily visual health checks of children and forwarding concerns to Center Director or Site Supervisor / Teacher for follow-up.
- Joins children at mealtime to model good nutrition, encourage interaction, socialization, and self-help skills.
- Assists in supervision of children, which includes but not limited to, covering other classroom staff’s rest periods, interacting with children during indoor and outdoor play.
- Assists children in personal hygiene (e.g., Toileting, diaper changing, tooth brushing)
- Performs general clerical tasks, e.g., children’s attendance, meal counts.
- Supports center with Food Service tasks when needed and/or during a vacancy.
BUILDING FAMILY PARTNERSHIPS
- Supports parent meetings by providing childcare when needed and translation.
- Supports parent meetings by setting up and/or cleanup of the site.
- Encourages parent participation.
- Supports / assists parent volunteers in classroom and / or other activities.
FACILITY SERVICES
- Performs routine janitorial duties, which include sweeping, vacuuming, mopping floors and carpets daily, washing windows weekly, cleaning hardware, appliances, furniture and furnishings, clean woodwork as needed.
- Hauls supplies within the childcare facilities as needed.
- Maintains childcare facilities in a clean and safe condition daily.
Credential Requirements (including Certification and/or Education Requirements):
Instructional Aide I / Janitor
- High School Diploma or GED, and
- Completes a minimum of 0-5 Early Childhood Education (ECE) or Child Development (CD) units within 12 months of hire.
- Enrolls and maintains educational plans leading to an Associate’s Degree in Child Development, early childhood education, or equivalent coursework following initial employment.
- Some experience working with preschool aged children and cleaning.
- Ensures a minimum of 15 hours of professional growth hours are completed and documented annually.
Instructional Aide II / Janitor
- High School Diploma or GED, and
- Completes 6-11units in Early Childhood Education (ECE) or Child Development (CD) units,
- Enrolls and maintains educational plans leading to an Associate’s Degree in Child Development, early childhood education, or equivalent coursework following initial employment.
- One year of experience working with children 0 to 5 years with childcare facility cleaning procedures.
- Ensures a minimum of 15 hours of professional growth hours are completed and documented annually.
LICENSES / CERTIFICATES / PERMITS:
- Assistant Teacher Permit within 12 months of hire.
