Job Description

PRIMARY FUNCTION:

Provide support to the Special Education program as directed by the Special Education certificated staff.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:

(Basic functions include but are not limited to)

Tutoring students in academic skill areas individually or in small groups.

Tutor students in sensory-motor and perceptual activities.

Supervise and assist students in a variety of settings (i.e., resource rooms, regular classrooms, cafeteria, playground, etc.)

Work with a variety of staff in team effort.

Provide support in management and discipline of students.

Assists students in their arrival to and departure from school

Assists students one on one with classroom and daily living skills (e.g. lifts/positions students, diapering, tube feeding, changing clothes, assisting on/off bus

May provide specialized health care procedures and assist students with toileting and personal hygiene

May position students in mobility assistance devices

Assist in the preparation and serving of snacks and meals and feeds children unable to feed themselves, using special feeding equipment as necessary

Preparation of materials and instructional settings.

Other activities as designed by the Special Education teacher.

 DEMONSTRATED KNOWLEDGE AND ABILITIES:

Knowledge of basic academic skills

Ability to effectively communicate with both students and adults

Ability to work well with a variety of people and educational settings.

Pleasant personality, dependable and ability to establish and maintain cooperative relations with others.

Ability to operate standard office and classroom equipment including but not limited to a computer and assigned software

Ability to lift 50 pounds

Sufficient strength to lift non-ambulatory students, lift and move adaptive equipment, and physically control a student up to 150 pounds with assistance

Sufficient body movement and mobility to demonstrate gross motor activities and climb in and out of vehicles

Minimum Qualifications:

High School diploma

Passing score on Minimum Proficiency Test

Desirable Qualifications:

Knowledge and skills of motivating, organizing and presenting academic skills activities for Special Education students.

First Aid/CPR Certification

Knowledge of areas of special needs unique to Special Education students (i.e., sensory motor, perceptual, etc.).

Knowledge in student management and discipline techniques.

College units, in-services, or aide certificate desired.

Range:  25
