JOB DESCRIPTION: CERTIFIED OCCUPATIONAL THERAPY ASSISTANT (COTA) Non-Instructional: Non-Exempt SUMMARY DEFINITION: Under the supervision of a licensed Occupational Therapist and the direction of the Director of Special Education or designee, the Certified Occupational Therapy Assistant (COTA) assists in implementing occupational therapy services to support students with disabilities in achieving educational goals. The COTA works with individual students and small groups to support motor, sensory, and functional goals, as outlined in their Individualized Education Program (IEP). ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES: (Note: These examples are intended only as illustrations of the various types of work performed in positions allocated to this class. The examples are not all-encompassing.) Provide direct occupational therapy services to students under the supervision and direction of a licensed Occupational Therapist. Carry out intervention plans developed by the Occupational Therapist, using appropriate techniques and strategies. Document student progress and maintain therapy logs, sharing data with the supervising OT for review. Assist in collecting data for assessments and contribute input toward present levels of performance. Support students with the use of adaptive equipment, assistive technology, and classroom accommodations as directed. Provide modeling and coaching for staff in the implementation of OT strategies in the classroom, under OT guidance. Assist in creating materials and adapting environments to support student access and participation. Collaborate with teachers, paraprofessionals, and related service providers to support student progress. Participate in IEP team meetings when requested by the supervising OT to share observations and progress data. Maintain confidentiality of student information and records at all times.
