Job Description
CLASSROOM TEACHER (K-8)
DEFINITION
The Classroom Teacher provides academic instruction, and teaches athletic/recreational and social skills to students in conjunction with the educational philosophy and curriculum requirements of the District. Teachers may be assigned to any grade or subject within the K-8 range which they are qualified to teach.
DISTINGUISHING CHARACTERISTICS
The Classroom Teacher has the primary responsibility for planning and delivering instruction and evaluating students’ progress to promote student mastery of skills and content knowledge in accordance with District standards of expected achievement for their grade level in each area of study.
SUPERVISION RECEIVED AND EXERCISED
The Classroom Teacher receives general direction from, and reports to, the superintendent. Classroom Teachers exercise functional supervision over any classified staff assigned to their classroom.
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:
Duties may include, but are not limited to, the following:
· Supports and enforces the District course of study, the use of approved textbooks, and the rules and regulations established by the State and the District.
· Develops and prioritizes long and short-term learning objectives within curriculum guidelines.
· Aligns classroom curriculum with District-adopted curricular objectives, courses of study, and authorized textbooks and materials.
· Plans daily class schedule, lessons, and activities to achieve a balanced program of individual and group work at the achievement level of the students involved.
· Delivers instruction using a variety of appropriate techniques and strategies, including lecture, observation, inquiry, discussion, cooperative learning, manipulatives, and other hands-on experiences, that promote active student engagement in the learning process.
· Uses large-group, small group, and individual instruction appropriate to subject matter and learners’ needs.
· Cooperates with other professional staff in the assessment of, and instructional planning for, individual student needs.
· Establishes and maintains a suitable learning environment which enhances students acquisition of knowledge and the mastery of skills.
· Provides an attractive physical environment in the classroom through displays, bulletin boards, and interest centers connected to learning objectives that maximize interest and motivation.
· Establishes and maintains mutual respect between teacher and students.
· Demonstrates enthusiasm, vitality, and rapport with his/her students, and creates an environment that encourages students to realize their full potential.
· Uses empathy and compassion in dealing with all children, recognizing, appreciating, and taking into consideration cultural, social, ethnic, economic, and other individual differences, fostering an environment that is free from discriminatory attitudes, practices, events or activities.
· Establishes and maintains high-standards of student behavior in order to establish a productive, exciting classroom environment conducive to learning, and hold students accountable for their conduct in the classroom, on the playground, during recess, and on the way to and from school.
· Promotes student understanding and appreciation of the rights and duties of American citizenship, the principles of a free government, the meaning of equity and human dignity, and ways to contribute to harmonious relations.
· Maintains parent contacts and holds parent conferences as required and when necessary to support or promote student achievement.
· Participates in school/department or grade level curriculum development and instructional improvement programs.
· Participates in the development, implementation, and evaluation of programs outlined in federal and state requirements.
· Provides formative and summative evaluation using multiple assessment strategies that measure student achievement of objectives, and utilizes these evaluation results to plan/adjust subsequent instruction.
· Administers group and standardized tests in accordance with the District’s testing program, and informs students, parents, and Administration of student progress.
· Attends and participates in school-related activities as required.
· Participates in faculty and committee meetings as necessary.
· Plans for effective use of assigned classified staff; provides training and monitors performance.
· Demonstrates professional responsibility, attitude, and growth.
· Provides continuous evaluation of personal and professional goals and objectives.
· maintains professional competency and appropriate certification through participation in professional development activities provided by the District and self-selected professional growth activities.
· Maintains accurate student records for grade reporting, attendance reports, achievement, and participation on co-curricular and school-sponsored activities.
· Inventories and requisitions books, instructional materials, and supplies as needed.
Performs related duties as assigned.
QUALIFICATION REQUIREMENTS
Knowledge of:
· Strategies used in lesson planning, instructing, and evaluating progress of students.
· Strategies to instruct students individually and in group situations.
· Techniques for effective student motivation and discipline.
· Innovative curriculum development strategies.
· Strategies for parent involvement.
· Strategies for working with students of multi-ethnic and varying socio-economic backgrounds.
Skill and Ability to:
· Plan and deliver an effective instructional program.
· Achieve and realize compatibility between personal professional goals and District philosophy and curriculum programs
· Adapt the curriculum and materials to the needs of each student.
· Evaluate and maintain personal and professional growth standards.
· Cooperate with school and District staff and parent community in instructional planning for individual student achievement.
· Maintain accurate records for reporting purposes.
· Provide a safe, positive, and productive environment which maintains student interest and motivation.
· Provide instruction according to State and federal program requirements.
· Direct and supervise assigned classified personnel.
· Analyze and interpret test scores for purposes of modifying instruction.
· Effectively communicate in written and verbal form with students, school personnel, parents, and Administration.
· Work effectively with students of varying ethnic and socio-economic backgrounds.
· Establish and maintain cooperative relationships with students, teachers, parents, and community.
EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE
Education: Bachelors Degree; Teacher Preparation Program, including student teaching. The teacher preparation program may be completed concurrently with employment under special circumstances, if approved by the district.
Licenses or Certificates: An appropriate valid California Teaching Credential for the grade level and/or subject areas assigned.
DESIRABLE EMPLOYMENT STANDARDS:
· Successful teaching experience.
· Knowledge of computer technology used in K-8 instruction.
· CLAD certification.
· Skills/experience in extra-curricular activities.
WORKING CONDITIONS:
Environment: Indoor and outdoor school environment.
Physical Abilities: Dexterity of hands and fingers to operate necessary office equipment in completing class assignments, sitting or standing for extended periods of time, walking to various classrooms at the assigned location, kneeling and bending, pushing and pulling, hearing and speaking to exchange information in person and on the phone, lifting up to 25 pounds.
Hazards: Exposure to anger and/or other emotional outbursts from parents and/or students.
