Job Summary

The Bus Driver plays a critical role in ensuring the safe and efficient transportation of students and school groups at St. Margaret’s Episcopal School. Under the direction of the Director of Security and Transportation, the Bus Driver will operate school buses and passenger vans for daily student routes, field trips, athletic events, and other school-related activities. This position requires a high level of responsibility, professionalism, and a commitment to student safety. ESSENTIAL DUTIES: Student Transportation • Drive school buses or passenger vans on routes in accordance with established school protocol. • Pick up and drop off students at designated locations while ensuring their safety. • Transport students, faculty, and Professional Community members to field trips and athletic events. Vehicle Operation and Maintenance • Perform daily safety inspections of assigned vehicles and equipment. • Report mechanical issues or safety concerns to the Transportation Coordinator immediately. • Fuel, clean, and maintain vehicles as needed to ensure readiness and cleanliness. Record Keeping and Compliance • Maintain accurate records of mileage, student counts, driving and non-driving time, and any issues encountered. • Complete schedules for daily routes and special trips. • Comply with all state and federal transportation laws and school policies. Student Supervision and Conduct • Supervise student behavior on the bus in alignment with school expectations and policies. • Promote a positive, respectful, and safe bus environment. • Report any incidents of misconduct to the Director of Security and Transportation or appropriate personnel. Additional Duties • Attend trainings and staff meetings as required. • Provide general support for school events as needed. • Perform additional related duties as required.

Requirements / Qualifications

QUALIFICATIONS: Required • Valid California Class A or B Driver’s License with passenger endorsement. • California School Bus Driver Certificate issued by the CHP. • Current First Aid certification approved by the CHP or American Red Cross. • Successful completion of an annual medical exam. • Strong communication, judgment, and safety awareness. • Ability to interact professionally with students, parents, and Professional Community members. Preferred • Previous experience driving school buses or transporting K–12 students. COMPENSATION AND BENEFITS: • Hourly Range: $27.00 - $30.00 • Schedule: Part-time; hours vary based on school needs, trips, and events • Additional: Wee Tartan Childcare Center (upon availability) PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS AND ENVIRONMENT: The Bus Driver must be able to safely operate school buses and passenger vans under varying road and weather conditions. The role requires the physical ability to sit for extended periods, enter and exit a bus multiple times daily, and conduct safety inspections involving bending, climbing, and lifting up to 40 pounds. Drivers must maintain sufficient visual and auditory acuity to monitor surroundings and respond quickly to potential hazards. Work may include early mornings, evenings, weekends, and occasional overtime based on school events and transportation demands.
