About the Employer
The Alameda County Office of Education (ACOE) leads with a student-centered vision, innovating in the classroom and building safe and supportive community schools. We collaborate and partner with local, county, and state agencies to address challenges students face. Join our team as we reimagine services to more holistically support students and erase the predetermination of failure for children, especially Alameda County’s most marginalized youth.
Job Summary
Job Summary
Career Guides in the Green Careers Guidance Initiative (GCGI) will be part of a small team at ACOE launching an ambitious effort to increase the number of high school graduates in Alameda County who enter the skilled trades, advanced manufacturing, and other jobs associated with preventing and adapting to climate change. GCGI Career Guides will receive extensive training on options for post-secondary programs and strategic choices young adults can make on a path toward living wage jobs in the trades, manufacturing and green careers and then provide intensive, ongoing one-on-one and small group post-secondary green career advising to targeted high school juniors and seniors in participating school districts in Alameda County. The GCGI Career Guides team will also support the skilled trades guidance capacity of staff in schools across the county through the development of guidance materials and professional development tailored to their needs. Lastly, GCGI Career Guides plan effective career awareness activities, including workplace and college tours, classroom presentations, and skilled trades/green career mini-units.
Requirements / Qualifications
THE POSITION: The Career Guide is responsible for illuminating career opportunities to youth and community members in Alameda County, supporting them as they navigate through entry steps, including enrolling in coursework, pre-apprenticeships, and apprenticeships and providing guidance to support sustained employment. This position at Alameda County Office of Education (ACOE) represents a shift away from community members navigating career pipelines individually and seeks to make entry into careers a supported, collective, and positive experience. It is a part of our effort to dramatically improve counseling supports for the 60%+ students who do not attend 4-year college directly after high school, helping those young adults make strategic, career oriented post-secondary choices that honor immediate financial pressures, long-term needs for stable, living wage careers, and their potential to develop into experts and leaders in essential careers in Alameda County. Career guides support navigation through pipelines into the skilled trades, into the education sector, into behavioral and mental health careers, and may provide support for navigating pipelines across multiple industry sectors. Career Guides will typically orient their work toward helping to meet staffing needs either in a specific industry or field or across multiple industry sectors. Career Guides will track the career progress of the youth and community members they serve over multiple years. This job reports to the assigned administrator. LOCATION: 313 W. Winton Ave, Hayward, CA 94544, Berkeley, Emeryville & Oakland High Schools.
TYPICAL DUTIES: Provide intensive, ongoing one-on-one and small group postsecondary advising to targeted high school juniors, seniors, and recent high school graduates. Assist young adults in applying and registering for a broad range of postsecondary training programs and jobs. Maintain open lines of communication with parents of young adults receiving guidance, enlisting their support for the career plans developed through your guidance. Provide tutoring and/or assist youth to obtain tutors or other supplemental academic support when needed in preparation for skills tests. Write letters of recommendation for youth when needed. Assist youth in planning steps required to make fully informed decisions regarding their career path, including visits to colleges, programs, and workplaces, conducting informational interviews with others in their targeted field, and engaging in other forms of research.
