About Gavilan:

Located in the heart of California between San Jose and Monterey, Gavilan College's main campus in Gilroy serves a diverse student population in a beautiful South Bay community with deep agricultural roots. In addition, we offer a variety of courses at our new full-service, state-of-the art Hollister campus as well as specialized programs at our San Martin and South San Jose locations. Gavilan is proud to meet the needs of our growing community, offering high-quality education in 54 transfer-related fields and 48 industry-relevant career pathways; in 2024-2025 we awarded more than 1,450 degrees and certificates.

As a Hispanic Serving Institution with a 60% Latinx student population, we are committed to achieving educational equity for all students. We work to provide students with a rich and relevant learning experience that emphasizes student engagement in and out of the classroom, encouraging students of all ethnic and socioeconomic backgrounds to realize their goals and become socially responsible leaders. Gavilan College fosters justice, equity, diversity, and inclusion through its Principles of Community. As a member of our community, you will join us in valuing the worth and dignity of every person, the pursuit of truth, devotion to excellence, and the principles of democratic citizenship. When you join our team at Gavilan College, you will become part of an innovative and equity-focused community that approaches higher education as a matter of social justice requiring broad collaboration among faculty, staff, administration, students, and community partners.

The Position:

Gavilan College seeks qualified applicants for a full-time, tenure-track faculty position in Studio Art. The successful candidate will have the skills to teach a broad range of two-dimensional (2D) art courses, which may include foundations in design and color, drawing, painting, graphic design, figure drawing, mural painting and public art, mixed media, and, depending on expertise, art history. We seek an excellent instructor who is also an effective communicator and collaborative program leader; someone who can support program and facility operations, contribute to strategic growth and sustainability, and foster student success.

• The Art program at Gavilan College consists of 2D and 3D design, drawing, painting, graphic arts, photography, ceramics, sculpture, figure drawing, art for childhood development, digital media, and art history.

• The 2D art facilities include a painting and drawing studio and access to a digital lab as well as a large gallery space for professional and student exhibitions.

• The tenure-track faculty member will be supported by a tenured 3D instructor, part-time faculty, and a Studio Art technician.

• With an average of 70 art and art history courses offered annually, Gavilan College's Art program enjoys consistently high enrollment of a diverse mix of transfer students, students from other degree programs, and community skill-builders.

Distinguishing Characteristics

Ideal Candidate:

Gavilan College is committed to recruiting individuals that embody our Principles of Community by:

• actively demonstrating a commitment to understanding and serving community college students who are diverse in socioeconomics, culture, ability, age, and ethnicity;

The ideal candidate for this position is an educator who actively embraces building a Studio Art program to serve populations historically underrepresented and underserved in higher education. With knowledge of both the strengths embodied by our diverse students and the barriers they face, the ideal candidate is well-poised to teach, support, and mentor Gavilan students. The ideal candidate desires connection with students and the community beyond the classroom and works to foster cross-cultural and anti-racist collaboration whether through creating research, scholarship, media, art, or cultural/political engagement opportunities. In joining Gavilan College, the ideal candidate thrives as a faculty member continually striving to employ anti-racist pedagogy and develop success strategies to meet the needs of historically underserved students.
