Job Summary

Job Summary

DEFINITION: Under supervision, to assist teachers in classroom and resource room operations and routing instructional support; to instruct and reinforce instruction of students individually and in small groups in accordance with instructions; to provide instructional record keeping support; to perform routine clerical duties; and to perform related work as required.

REQUIREMENTS: • Bilingual in English and Spanish, Cantonese, Mandarin or Vietnamese • Proof of High School Diploma or GED equivalent and completion of two years of higher education studies (48 semester units) OR Possess an Associate of Arts degree, Associate of Science degree or higher degree AND Passed the Garvey School District Local Assessment (PTAP).

Examples of Duties: Reinforce teacher lessons and encourage students; read with student and discuss what was read. Reinforce lessons and provide instruction and support to student with special needs; implement goals from the I.E.P. in accordance with teacher plans; reinforce on-task behavior for special education students; discuss and follow up with teacher on specific learning strategies and behavior problems as they occur with individual students/groups; implement behavior plans. Instruct and model appropriate social behaviors; monitor, assist, and supervise students. Assign class work and homework in accordance with teacher’s plans. Provide physical assistance to students, when necessary. Prepare materials and set up projects. Attend conferences and meetings. Assist parent volunteers. Supervise students in the classroom, during recess, and on field trips, and help teacher maintain appropriate classroom behavior. Provide primary language instruction and/or reinforce instructions to ESL students (Instructional Assistant-Bilingual positions).Translate and interpret for non-English speaking students and parents (Instructional Assistant-Bilingual positions). Translate and interpret for school site staff (Instructional Assistant-Bilingual positions). Perform related duties as assigned. EXPERIENCE AND ABILITIES: • Speak a language(s), designated by the District at a conversational level • Read, write, and speak a language(s) designated by the district at a fluent level. • Communicate with students and motivate them to participate in learning activities. • Learn to reinforce teaching in special subject matter areas or to assist students who have special learning needs by watching teachers or specialists. • Understand and carry out oral and written instructions. • Establish and maintain effective relationships with those contacted in the course of work.
