Job Description

The San Bernardino Valley College (SBVC) Applied Technology Division seeks an innovative faculty member with a demonstrated commitment to student success for a full-time tenure track position. The successful candidate will exhibit a passion for teaching and will have an opportunity to lead a growing Heavy and Medium Duty Truck (HMDT) program and to work collaboratively with the college's other departments to build an integrated program that offers multiple academic and professional pathways. Additionally, the successful candidate will demonstrate a commitment to integrating equity and inclusion in all aspects of their work. The faculty will collaborate with local, regional, and national heavy duty truck companies and sustainable energy organizations to establish internships, Registered Apprenticeships, and other employment opportunities for students.

 

Representative Duties: 

The following duties are typical of those performed by faculty in this classification. Other duties may be assigned as appropriate.

 

• Teach a full load of classes, incorporating equitable teaching practices.

• Teach students the skills and knowledge necessary to diagnose, repair, and maintain diesel and gasoline truck systems, electric, CNG, and hydrogen fueled heavy-duty vehicles.

• Teach and develop courses in topics such as heavy-duty engines, brake systems, suspension and steering, drive trains, electrical systems, and more.

• Create course materials, such as syllabi, lectures, homework, quizzes, exams, lab manuals, etc.

• Evaluate and grade students' homework, laboratory work, and assignments.

• Supervise and guide students in the safe operation and maintenance of heavy and medium duty truck equipment.

• Work collegially with the faculty and staff of the division to advance student success.

• Participate in assessment of student learning outcomes, community outreach, departmental website development, curriculum development, and program review process.

• Participate in regular professional development activities and stay current with advancements in truck technologies and instructional practices.

• Maintain relations with business and industry partners, and participate in departmental and advisory committees.

• Effectively develop and maintain culturally sensitive and equity-minded learning environments.

• Beyond the learning environment, demonstrate cultural competence, sensitivity to and understanding of the diverse academic, socioeconomic, cultural, disability, gender identity, sexual orientation, and ethnic backgrounds of community college students, faculty, and staff as these factors relate to the need for equity-minded practice.

• Provide a safe and positive educational environment conducive to effective learning.

• Provide instruction and student support in a variety of formats and deliveries such as online, in-person, hybrid, hyflex, fast-track, accelerated, etc.

• Maintain current knowledge in the HMDT discipline and engage in innovative methods of effective in-person and online education.

• Positively engage students, promote development of critical thinking skills, collaboration, and empathy.

• Maintain professional and ethical standards.

• Participate in HMDT pathway development through outreach with high schools, four-year universities, and industry.

• Participate in recruitment, outreach and development of cooperative work experience opportunities for students.

• Provide the skills and knowledge required for competency in the field of heavy and medium duty truck maintenance, including use of reference materials, tools, equipment, and technology.

• Perform other duties as required by contract, collective bargaining agreements, and general institutional needs.

 

Qualifications

• Bachelor's degree and two (2) years of related experience; OR

• Associate's degree and six (6) years of related experience

 

and

 

• Experience that indicates a sensitivity to and an understanding of the diverse academic, socioeconomic, cultural, disability, and ethnic backgrounds of community college students, including those with physical and learning disabilities.

 

Desired Qualifications: 

• DMV Class A driver's license.

• Capable of teaching all courses in the Heavy and Medium Duty truck program across multiple formats, including online, in-person, hybrid, hyflex, fast-track, and accelerated delivery methods.

• Recent industry experience and proficient knowledge of alternative fuel systems, employment opportunities, and emerging training needs across all areas of the heavy and medium duty truck industry.

• Actively engaged with industry partners and energy-efficient organizations, with experience developing industry-sponsored programs, articulation agreements, and dual enrollment opportunities with schools and colleges.

• Industry certifications, such as Automotive Service Excellence (ASE) Truck certifications, or the ability to obtain them.

Work is performed primarily in a standard office setting. Occasional exposure to risks controlled by safety precautions.

Primary functions require sufficient physical ability and mobility to work in an office setting; to stand or sit for prolonged periods of time; to occasionally stoop, bend, kneel, crouch, reach, and twist; to occasionally lift, carry, push, and/or pull light to moderate amounts of weight up to 30 pounds; to operate office equipment requiring repetitive hand movement and fine coordination including use of a computer keyboard; and to verbally communicate to exchange information.

 

Vision:

 

See in the normal visual range with or without correction; vision sufficient to read computer screens and printed documents; and to operate assigned equipment.

 

Hearing:

 

Hear in the normal audio range with or without correction.

 

Employment Requirements

 

The person selected for hire will be required to complete the following pre-employment requirements:
