SUMMARY DESCRIPTION: 

 

This is a full-time, tenure-track, 198-day faculty counselor position in SAS at San Bernardino Valley College. The SAS Counselor provides comprehensive academic and vocational counseling services as well as recommends appropriate academic adjustments, auxiliary aids and services to students with disabilities. The SAS Counselor is a member of a team of educational professionals who develop and implement disability support services designed to promote student success and meet legal requirements.

 

Representative Duties: 

 

The duties below are representative of the assignment and are not intended to cover all duties. The omission of specific statements of duties does not exclude them from the position if the scope of work is similar, related, or a logical responsibility of this position.

 

• Provide counseling services for students in the SAS program including reviewing disability verifications, determining necessary accommodations, explaining procedures to receive various accommodations, completing semesterly reviews of accommodation need, reviewing Rights and Responsibilities, and recommending follow-up activities.

• Provide individualized counseling related to academic and vocational goals, course selection, major and program of study options, and the development and revision of initial and comprehensive educational plans.

• Provide transfer-related counseling for students who are interested in transferring to a university. Counseling services include identifying specific courses needed to transfer including Associate Degree for Transfer options based upon their needs and interests.

• Meet with students and provide counseling related to academic progress, grades, academic standing, changes to major, use of accommodations, modifications to accommodations, and referrals to resources on and off campus.

• Consult and collaborate with instructional faculty and college personnel regarding academic success classroom management issues, and other matters associated with working with students with disabilities.

• Provide disability related counseling services in the areas of health and wellbeing, behavior, personal stressors, etc.

• Liaison as appropriate with other resources including Student Health Services, the Behavioral Intervention Team, classroom professors, college staff, Department of Rehabilitation, Inland Regional Center, and other entities.

• Attend faculty meetings and engage in the development and assessment of student area outcomes.

• Serve on campus committees, participate in program evaluations and other departmental activities and events (e.g., outreach, in-reach, etc.)

• Complete clerical and administrative responsibilities in a timely manner and follow college, division, and department policies and procedures.

• Collaborate effectively with other faculty, staff, and administrators to plan, develop, and execute related programs.

• Maintain scheduled office and campus hours and participate in department/division meetings and committees.

• Late afternoon and/or evening assignments will be required as part of the regular contract.

• Communicate effectively, both orally and in writing.

• Demonstrate a sensitivity to, and understanding of, the diverse academic, socioeconomic, cultural, disability, gender identity, sexual orientation, and ethnic backgrounds of community college students.

• Performs other counseling-related duties as assigned.

 

Qualifications

 

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS: 

 

Education:

 

Master's degree in rehabilitation counseling

 

OR

 

Master's degree in counseling, guidance counseling, student personnel, clinical or counseling psychology, education counseling, social work, career development, marriage and family therapy, marriage, family and child counseling,

 

or a Bachelor's degree in marriage and family therapy or in marriage, family and child counseling and possession of a license as a Marriage and Family Therapist (MFT); and either 15 or more semester units in upper division or graduate level course work related to people with disabilities, or completion of six semester units, or the equivalent of a graduate-level counseling practicum or counseling field work courses, in a post-secondary Disabled Students Programs and Services program or in a program dealing with people with disabilities, or two years of full time experience,

 

or the equivalent, in one or more of the following:

 

(A) Counseling for students with disabilities; or

 

(B) Counseling in industry, government, public agencies, military or private social welfare organizations in which the responsibilities are for persons with disabilities, or the equivalent.

 

Work Experience:

 

Evidence of experience demonstrating a sensitivity to and understanding of the diverse academic, socioeconomic, cultural, disability, and ethnic backgrounds of community college students and personnel.

 

DESIRED QUALIFICATIONS: 

 

• Counseling experience at the community college level.

• Experience creating comprehensive education plans that meet students academic goals.

• Knowledge of assistive technologies to facilitate access to educational programs for students with disabilities.

• Knowledge of assessment measures to include interpretation and utilization of data in the counseling process.

 

Physical Demands and Working Environment

Environment: Work is performed primarily in a food cafeteria setting; exposure to sharp knives and slicers, very hot foods, equipment, and metal objects used in food services. Incumbents may be required to work evenings.

 

Physical: Primary functions require sufficient physical ability and mobility to work in a food cafeteria setting; to stand or sit for prolonged periods of time; to frequently stoop, bend, kneel, crouch, reach, grasp, and twist; to frequently lift, carry, push, and/or pull light to moderate amounts of weight up to 30 pounds; to occasionally lift, carry, push, and/or pull heavier amounts of weight with or without assistance; dexterity of hands and fingers to operate food service equipment; and to verbally communicate to exchange information.

 

Vision: See in the normal visual range with or without correction; vision sufficient to read printed documents; and to operate assigned equipment.

 

Hearing: Hear in the normal audio range with or without correction.

EMPLOYMENT REQUIREMENTS 

 

The person selected for hire will be required to complete the following pre-employment requirements:

 

• Submit to and successfully pass DOJ live scan/fingerprinting. Cost of live-scan services to be borne by candidate.

 

• Sealed official transcript(s) in envelope from institution or electronic copies emailed directly from institution (for positions with higher education requirement)

 

• Tuberculosis (TB) risk assessment

 

• Employment verification(s) (for salary placement on faculty salary schedule). The salary posted in the job listing reflects the range from the starting minimum to the maximum placement, which is determined based on the candidate's education and experience once the position is offered and the salary placement paperwork is submitted to the Office of Human Resources.
