Description of Position: With minimal supervision, the head custodian is in charge of the cleaning and operation of the buildings and grounds of an elementary school. Directly Responsible To: Principal Major Duties and Responsibilities: 1. Plans and directs the work of custodians and also does such work. 2. Operates the school heating and air-conditioning systems. 3. Opens and closes the buildings. 4. Makes minor repairs and reports the need for other repairs. 5. Rearranges furniture and sets up equipment required for special events. 6. Inspects buildings and grounds daily to see that proper safety, sanitary, and fire prevention safeguards are maintained. 7. Helps paint and restore buildings and grounds. 8. Orders, receives, and accounts for supplies and equipment. 9. Moves staff member’s materials during track changes. 10. Is responsible for security of campus. 11. Other related work as assigned. Minimum Experience and Job Requirements: 1. Three years experience as a school custodian desirable. 2. Thorough knowledge of requirements for maintaining school building and grounds in a clean and orderly condition. 3. Ability to plan and to supervise the work of others. 4. Ability to understand and to carry out oral and written instructions. 5. Ability to operate heating and ventilating equipment. 6. Ability to operate and to maintain power and hand tools and related equipment. 7. Ability to read and to write English. 8. Ability to work under pressure and with interruptions. Education Requirements: High school education or equipment.
