BASIC FUNCTION:
Under the direction of a credentialed school nurse, performs specialized health care services for students; travels to various school sites to perform a variety of nursing duties, maintains a healthy and safe environment for students and staff; performs related work as required.
REPRESENTATIVE DUTIES:
- Respond in emergency situations for special education and regular education students which could include anaphylactic shock, cardiopulmonary distress, dysreflexia, insulin shock, and other medical emergencies
- Deliver specialized health care services to students as directed by the Physician’s order and under direction of a credentialed school nurse, and as indicated by the Individualized Health Care Plan and according to standardized procedural guidelines
- Feed students who need special assistance
- Perform duties related to student hygiene
- Administer medications per Physician’s orders and under the direction of a credentialed school nurse.
- Assist in positioning student using therapeutic equipment
- Accompany student on the bus to and from school and on field trips when indicated in the Individualized Health Care Plan
- Effectively communicate and maintain cooperative relationships with those contacted in the course of work
- Perform other related duties as assigned
KNOWLEDGE AND ABILITIES:
Knowledge and Application of:
- Health care practices and procedures related to physically handicapped individuals
- Computers and ability to use programs to develop and produce correspondence and reports
- Equipment such as communication devices, lifts, standing frames, M.O.V.E. equipment, etc.
Ability to:
- Establish and maintain effective communication
- Establish and maintain working relationships with staff/students and parents/caregivers
- Understand and follow verbal and written instructions
- Act effectively and appropriately in emergency situations
- Analyze situations and adopt an effective course of action
- Perform and prioritize multiple functions or tasks
- Adequately observe and assess students
EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE:
Education:
High school diploma or equivalent
Valid California State license as a Licensed Vocational Nurse (L.V.N.) Valid Cardio-Pulmonary Resuscitation (CPR) Certificate
Valid California Driver’s License
Experience:
Experience working with individuals with physical or health related needs
PHYSICAL DEMANDS:
- Sufficient vision to read fine print, sufficient depth perception, good color perception
- Sufficient hearing to hear work area noise and normal conversation in persona and on the phone
- Ability to speak in a normal voice to be able to be heard and understood on the telephone and at the work site
- Ability to reach horizontally and vertically with arms, sufficient dexterity to manipulate small objects and to print/write legibly
- Sufficient physical ability, strength, mobility and stamina to drive a vehicle, bend, stretch, stand, kneel, walk and extend legs
- Sufficient physical ability, strength, mobility and stamina to lift, carry, push and/or pull objects which may frequently exceed 40 pounds
- Physical ability to sit for extended periods of time
