Job Summary
The job of Payroll Clerk is done for the purposes of providing a variety of accounting-clerical tasks involved in maintaining, compiling, verifying financial, payroll, payment, or statistical records, and auditing financial transactions for compliance with applicable codes, laws, and regulations; and communicating information to staff and other agencies. This job reports to the Director of Payroll.
Requirements / Qualifications
SKILLS are required to perform multiple tasks with a potential need to upgrade skills in order to meet changing job conditions. Specific skill based competencies required to satisfactorily perform the functions of the job include: operating standard office equipment; using pertinent software applications; applying codes, laws, regulations, and policies as prescribed; compute mathematical problems such as addition, subtraction, multiplication, division and percentages; and work with minimum supervision. KNOWLEDGE is required to perform basic math, including calculations using fractions, percent, and/or ratios; read a variety of manuals, write documents following prescribed formats, and/or present information to others; and understand complex, multi-step written and oral instructions. Specific knowledge based competencies required to satisfactorily perform the functions of the job include: concepts of grammar and punctuation; correct English grammar and vocabulary for oral and written communication skills; common office machines; office methods and practices; principles of effective customer service; business telephone etiquette; general payroll guidelines, practices, terminology and recordkeeping methods.
Required Testing: Pre-Employment Proficiency Test Selection Procedure: Applications will be screened, and those candidates whose backgrounds best match the requirements of the position will be invited to participate in a competitive examination process, which may include any combination of the following: Training & Experience evaluation (T&E), multiple-choice question test, job-related performance exercise, and technical/ oral appraisal interview. Examination procedures are subject to change as deemed necessary by the Director of the Personnel Commission.

Please note that the current vacancy for this position is 4 hours per day, 5 days a week, with a 12-month work schedule per year.

Candidates who pass all of the examination processes are ranked on an eligibility list according to their score(s). Selection for the position will be made from among the top three (3) ranks of candidates. The eligibility list will be used for hiring purposes in other vacancies in the same, or equivalent, job classification and will be active for six (6) months (Merit Rule 50.100.1).
