BUS DRIVER
PRIMARY FUNCTION: Under general supervision, operate a school bus over designated routes transporting school children.
DIRECTLY RESPONSIBLE TO: Administrator of the area of assignment and/or designee
DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
Drive a bus daily, or as assigned over designated routes transporting children to and from school or on field trips.
Conduct daily safety and operations inspection of assigned vehicle; recognize malfunctions in equipment and take appropriate action; report needed mechanical repair
Maintain order among children on the bus and at bus stops; instruct students on safety regulations and policies related to passenger conduct.
Follow district policies in dealing with the discipline of pupils and contact with parents, staff, and general public.
Observe all rules and regulations of the district and state laws and regulations regarding transportation of pupils in a safe and efficient manner; also, responsible for keeping vehicle clean and fueled.
Administer first aid and/or CPR as authorized under current standard certification.
Maintain accurate records and prepare reports; including student count, required mileage and other logs as required.
Attend and participate in staff meetings and in-service activities; attend workshops, conferences and classes to increase professional knowledge, including the areas of safety, first aid and related matters.
Perform other related duties as required.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:
Knowledge of:
School bus transportation procedures and safe bus driving practices; State laws, rules, and regulations pertaining to school bus operations and pupil transportation; First Aid and CPR principles and practices.
Ability to:
Drive a school bus safely and efficiently; Maintain order among students on a school bus; Recognize malfunctions in equipment and take appropriate action; Learn designated bus routes, including stops and traffic hazards; Administer first aid and CPR; Keep clear and accurate records and reports; Work independently with limited supervision; Communicate in English clearly and concisely, both orally and in writing; Establish and maintain cooperative working relationships with those contracted in the course of work.
Experience:
One year experience in transporting students or satisfactory completion of a formal classroom and behind-the-wheel training program by the California Highway Patrol for the operation of a school bus.
Education:
High School Diploma or equivalent
License/Certificates Required:
Possession of a valid and appropriate California Class A or B Motor Vehicle License, a California School Bus Drivers Certificate to drive all District school vehicles, a valid up-to-date Medical Examiner's Certificate, and must meet the First Aid requirements for school bus drivers. CPR certification within six (6) months of employment.
DESIRABLE QUALIFICATIONS:
Prior school bus driving experience. Bilingual English/Spanish.
PHYSICAL EFFORT/WORK ENVIRONMENT:
Good physical condition; Ability to hear sufficiently to be aware of traffic and road distractions/conditions and listen to children; Ability to see sufficiently to perform the duties of the position; Lift and assist students in an emergency situation; sit for long duration of time; Pass District physical examination which includes drug and alcohol screening. Random drug and alcohol testing is required.
