Job Summary
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS: Assists in the scheduling of student transportation routes and the assigning of bus drivers and equipment; assists school personnel in scheduling regular student transportation routes and special transportation needs. Maintains records of driver time, mileage and equipment use; calls in relief drivers as needed; makes recommendations on driver discipline. Answers parent and student questions regarding District transportation program; maintains a variety of records and files related to the transportation program. Inputs data into information management systems and generates reports; handles routine correspondence and telephone inquiries; supervises the maintaining of appropriate safety precautions and procedures. Dispatches buses and bus drivers; assists with driver training for bus drivers, including classroom and behind-the-wheel training in operation and safety; conducts observations in the field. Attends meetings regarding new laws and training requirements; consults with parents, teachers and students on questions of transportation and riding safety; schedules appointments for drivers’ physicals. Checks vehicle cleanliness, completing daily reports and vehicle safety inspections; operates a school bus to transport students; transports buses to contractors for maintenance; drives a school bus observing student behavior standards and defensive driving techniques; operates District Vehicles assists mechanics with periodic maintenance checks of buses in accordance with State and District requirements. OTHER DUTIES: Performs related duties similar to the above in scope and function as assigned.
Requirements / Qualifications
- Possession of a valid California Commercial Driver’s license (CDL) with a “P” – Passenger Endorsement and “S” School Bus Endorsement. (or be willing to get the School Bus Endorsement) - Proof of automobile insurance. - Current Medical Examination Report (Dl-51). - Valid First Aid Certification issued by an authorized agency or qualification by California Highway Patrol First Examination. Incumbents are subject to mandatory alcohol and drug testing.
KNOWLEDGE OF: - Provisions of the California Motor Vehicle Code and the Education Code applicable to the operation of vehicles in the transportation of students. - District policy and procedures. - Record keeping. - General principles of supervision. - School district routes and surrounding area. - Basic math. - First aid. - Appropriate safety precautions and procedures. ABILITY TO: - Pass physical examination as prescribed by the state. - Pass mandatory alcohol and/or drug tests. - Maintain records. - Administer first aid. - Operate and communicate via a two-way radio. - Operate a typewriter and a computer. - Operate a District vehicle observing legal and defensive driving practices. - Understand and carry out oral and written instructions. - Establish and maintain effective relationships with those contacted in the course of work. Any combination of training, education and experience which demonstrates an ability to perform the duties of the position. A typical qualifying entrance background is experience which demonstrates an ability to perform the duties of the position. A typical qualifying entrance background is experience operating a school bus, including large and small buses; or experience at or equivalent to the level of Bus Driver in the Moorpark Unified School District, wherein the incumbent has acquired the knowledge and abilities listed above. May be assigned to routes requiring the working of broken shifts and/or special assignments. Some routes may require physical assistance to the handicapped.
