SERVICE JOB SPECIFICATION JOB CLASS: SUPPORT STAFF LEVEL: CROSSING GUARD POSITION TITLE: CROSSING GUARD CLASS DEFINITION: To assist students in getting to school safely, to provide adult supervision of children crossing the street, and to report motorists that create a hazard for the children. POSITION DEFINITION: Under the supervision of the site administrator, responsibilities include assisting students getting to and from school safely and to do related work as required. EXAMPLES OF DUTIES: • Assist students in crossing the street safely • Maintain order of students • Report any students not following safety or school rules to Teachers and/or Site Administrator • Report reckless motorists or anyone creating an unsafe situation for the children to school management/authorities • Monitor street crossings during the appointed time when children go to and from school • Watch for suspicious individuals in and around school areas and report as necessary • Use appropriate signs, hand signals, district assigned orange safety vest, whistle, and flags while directing vehicular and pedestrian traffic • Warn pedestrians and drivers of existing dangers EMPLOYMENT STANDARDS: Education and Experience: High School Diploma or GED. Knowledge and Abilities: Knowledge of the practices of street safety and basic Department of Motor Vehicles driving rules. Ability to establish and maintain effective relationships with adults and children; ability to maintain schedules providing for regular supervision of students as assigned; ability to work cooperatively with others. PHYSICAL ABILITIES: ___ Communicate clearly with children ___ Remain calm in emergency or stressful situations ___ Follow oral and written instructions ___ Meet the physical requirements necessary to safely and effectively perform assigned duties; this includes walking and standing for long periods of time ___ Able to work outdoors in all types of weather and traffic conditions ___ Able to see distance, color vision, peripheral vision, depth perception, and able to adjust focus ___ Must have adequate sight and hearing to protect children from potential traffic hazards ___ Able to hold traffic sign above head for short periods of time that is visible to traffic SALARY SCHEDULE: Hourly EVALUATED BY: School Administrator EVALUATION REVIEWED BY: Superintendent or designee
