Job Summary

The San Diego County Office of Education (SDCOE) is currently recruiting to fill the limited-term position of Online Instructor (with emphasis on Designated Subjects teacher credentialing) for the Teacher Effectiveness and Preparation (TEP) Unit. The Online Instructor provides online instruction in statewide teacher credentialing and professional growth programs.

Requirements / Qualifications

This limited-term position may be asked to:

  • Teach assigned courses as specified in the schedule and course contract.
  • Learn to utilize the LMS Canvas to deliver course content, grade assignments, and communicate with candidates.
  • Maintain and update courses based on best practices, legislature, or current research; verify linked materials are active and update, prior to the start of a course.
  • Facilitate participation and student discussions to support in active engagement thru valuable and relevant feedback and coaching.
  • Monitor, assist, and support candidates in completing all course requirements
  • Collaborate with other instructors to ensure consistency and continuity in candidate support and expectations.
  • Communicate with candidates regularly including course announcements, individual communication as needed, and responses to messages within 24 - 48 hours.
  • Be available for candidate consultation through scheduled appointments by phone, email, or virtual meetings.
  • Attend scheduled instructor meetings, professional development, and other assigned meetings as required.
  • Log into Canvas daily to update grades and respond to candidate inquiries.
  • Review and grade any assignment submissions by Sunday morning of the final weekend of a course.
  • Develop and revise course objectives, activities, tasks, and materials based on curriculum requirements provided by the TEP team.
  • Communicate with program staff about any concerns and respond to messages within 48 hours.

Local residency requirements: 

  • Must be a California Resident
  • Must be able to attend an in-person meeting during pre-employment processing (virtual option for out of county hires)

This position requires:

  • A valid California Designated Subjects Credential (Career Technical Education (CTE), Adult Education, or Special Subjects (ROTC or BMD)
  • A minimum of five (5) years teaching experience in CTE, Adult Ed or Special Subjects setting
  • Prior experience as a mentor or coach to other adults and working with or teaching students and/or adults in person, online, or in a hybrid setting is preferred.

      Comments and Other Information

      It is important to note to become a substitute/limited-term employee, there may be a fingerprinting requirement that currently costs up to $77 (this is an up-front, out-of-pocket cost that must be paid in the form of a money order or cashier’s check). In addition, if you apply and are selected for a permanent position at any point there would be an additional $77 cost (currently) for fingerprinting as a permanent employee (taken out of your first regular paycheck).

All required California Credentials (if applicable, as issued by the California Commission on Teacher Credentialing) must be confirmed prior to employment with SDCOE.
