Job Summary
Under the general supervision of the Site Administration. Under the direction of the Credentialed School Nurse this position is designed to assist the Credentialed School Nurse to maintain and improve the health of the students by providing an environment conducive to healthful living and by giving consideration to the physical, mental, emotional, and social aspects of students’ health.
Requirements / Qualifications
Required Qualifications: 1. High School diploma or equivalent with clerical courses or office experience. 2. AA/AS Degree or 48 college units. 3. Valid California Licensed Vocational Nurse (LVN) or Registered Nurse (RN) license. 4. Valid First Aid and CPR Certificates issued by an authorized agency. 5. Valid California Driver’s License and reliable transportation to travel to various school sites. 6. Previous experience working in a school district preferred. 7. Experience working with individuals with physical or health related needs. 8. Bilingual qualification is an asset, but not a requirement. Responsibilities and Duties (under the direction of a physician or registered nurse): According to established District guidelines and procedures. Under the direction of the school nurse: 1. Travel to various school sites within the district to provide basic nursing services and perform a wide variety of nursing duties: a. Perform first aid and screen ill or injured students. b. Administer medication according to written physician and parent instructions. c. Perform specialized physical health care services as directed by written physician order (i.e. intermittent clean catheterization and/or assist student in self-clean catheterization, ostomy care, administer tube feedings, blood glucose monitoring, insulin administration). d. Distribute, communicate, implement, and execute interventions in accordance with student Individualized School Health Plans (ISHP) and Emergency Action Plans (ECP). e. Respond to and evaluate emergency situations, condition of students, and provide instruction, care, and first aid as needed. Notify school nurse and parents.
2. Assist in maintaining a healthy and safe school environment, including collecting and reporting data (vital signs, illnesses and injuries, head lice checks, skin or eye abnormalities, or other acute conditions), distributing information to staff, students, and parents regarding safety issues, hand-washing practices, and communicable and health-related matters. 3. Establish and maintain electronic and written student cumulative health and immunization files. 4. Participate in planning, preparing, maintaining, and distributing a variety of health-related records, reports, notices, doctors orders, parental consents, and referrals related to assigned activities; maintain a variety of health services lists, forms, records, notices and correspondence. 5. Assist in compiling data for State, County, and District reports of site health issues, including but not limited to results on screenings, vision and hearing reports, annual immunization records, annual physical and oral health examination records; preparing list of students with health problems and students exempt for physical education participation. 6. Monitor, maintain inventory, order first aid supplies, and distribute first aid supplies or kits to appropriate site or office locations to ensure personnel can adequately meet student needs. 7. Effectively communicate and maintain cooperative relationships with those contacted in the course of work. Respond to parent and staff inquiries, exchange information, refer students, report suspected child abuse, coordinate activities and resolve health-related issues and concerns. 8. Perform other related duties as assigned.
