Safety Monitor

DEFINITION
Under general supervision of the principal, to direct and control vehicle and pedestrian traffic flow to ensure safe street crossings for students; to monitor student activity on the playground before school, during lunch, and/or after school; responsible for taking minor disciplinary action against students when necessary and for reporting names of students who are discipline problems to the school principal or his/her designee; may be responsible for administering first aid to students and for reporting all injuries to the principal or his/her designee.

Essential Duties
· Directs and controls vehicle and pedestrian traffic flow at assigned pedestrian stations.
· Provides safe-street crossing for students.
· Enforces vehicle codes, school rules and regulations.
· Reports student pedestrian violations to school authorities.
· May supervise students on the playground, at lunch areas, and on campus as directed by the principal.
· Enforce playground, lunch area, and campus behavior standards.
· Organize and supervise playground activities.
· Acknowledge and reinforce desirable student behavior.
· Report on appropriate referral form(s) special behavioral problems to school principal or his/her designee.
· Performs other related duties as may be assigned.

QUALIFICATION GUIDE

Knowledge of:
· California State Vehicle Code
· School safety rules and regulations
· Behavior patterns of students
· Basic written and spoken English
· Basic knowledge of student games and their rules
· Basic first aid

Ability to:
· Direct and control vehicle and pedestrian traffic at assigned pedestrian station.
· Establish and maintain effective working relationships with students, staff members and the public.
· Maintain cooperative working relationships with those contacted in the course of work.
· Follow oral and written instructions and directions.
· Demonstrate dependability and reliability.
· Learn and apply school and district rules pertaining to student behavior.
· Use good judgment in interacting with students.
· Positively influence children’s behavior and standards of conduct.
· Be firm, fair and consistent in dealing with student behavior problems.
· Be a positive role model for students.

Training an Experience
· Equivalent to the completion of the twelfth grade or any other combination of training and experience that could likely provide desired knowledge and abilities.
· Complete pedestrian and traffic control training provided by district.
