Under the general supervision of the Transportation Supervisor, and the leadership of the assigned bus driver assists in the care and supervision of special education students aboard a school bus while they are being transported to and from school; provides assistance with student’s health care, ingress and egress from buses; performs other essential job-related work as required.

BUS ATTENDANT
DEFINITION:
Under the general supervision of the Transportation Supervisor, and the leadership of the assigned bus driver, assists in the care and supervision of special education students aboard a school bus while they are being transported to and from school; provides assistance with student’s health care, ingress and egress from buses; performs other essential job-related work as required.
EXAMPLE OF DUTIES:
• Assists special education students for the purpose of providing health care and other special needs during transport, safe ingress and egress from buses including both emergency situations and normal transport.
• Cleans assigned vehicles, both interior/exterior, for the purpose of maintaining appearance, sanitation, and safety of vehicle.
• Instructs special education students for the purpose of enforcing rules and regulations and maintaining safety.
• Prepares documentation for the purpose of providing written support and/or conveying information.
• Assists other personnel as may be required for the purpose of supporting them in the completion of their work activities.
• Assists in providing first aid for students in emergencies.
• Uses and assists in using a variety of emergency and safety equipment, such as fire extinguisher, first aid kit, reflectors, strap cutters, two-way radio, parking brake, manual/automatic wheelchair lift, harness/restraints, d-ring belts and car seats.
• Communicates with hard of hearing students using sign language.
• Complies with applicable state, local and federal rules, regulations and laws, as well as the policies and procedures of the District, including District transportation procedures, Transportation Bus Attendant Handbook, state vehicle code and regulations, and State Education Code Section 14203.
• Establishes and maintains effective working relationships with teachers, parents, students, administrators, coworkers, and the general public.
• Performs other related duties as required or assigned.
MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS:
Skills to operate standard office equipment provide for special health care needs of students, communicate effectively with students and caregivers. Knowledge of vehicle operation and special health care requirements. Ability to understand and address students with special needs. Ability to understand and carry out oral and written instructions.
EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE:
Education equivalent to completion of the 12th grade. Previous experience working with special needs children desired.

PHYSICAL ABILITIES:
• Visual capability to read handwritten or typed documents and the display screen of various office machines and equipment.
• Able to conduct verbal communications and conversations.
• Ability to communicate in sign language with hearing impaired using hands and fingers.
• Ability to hear normal range of verbal conversations (approx. 60 decibels).
• Ability to exhibit near/far visual acuity, depth perception; accommodation for field of vision.
• Able to sit, stand, stoop, crouch, kneel, bend, and walk for extended periods.
• Able to exhibit full range of motion for shoulder internal and external rotation.
