MIDDLE SCHOOL VICE PRINCIPAL
DEFINITION
The vice principal shall serve directly under the principal and shall assist in the instructional and administrative leadership of the school, including assisting the principal in planning, implementing, and administering the educational program. Through line organization procedures and management organization channels, the vice principal will participate in recommending district policies and regulations to the superintendent.
TYPICAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
Some duties and responsibilities relating to instruction are:
Develops the master schedule of classes, room assignments, and department schedules for the effective utilization of personnel within the school, the master schedule of school events, and the daily or weekly bulletin.
- Observes teachers in classrooms and reports evaluation to the principal.
- Supervises the substitute and home teacher program, if so assigned by principal.
- Implements and supervises the special education program, including chairing admission meetings and assuring correct placement of the students in the program, if requested by principal.
- Maintains direct and constant liaison with classified staff regarding schedules for the master program and report cards, assuming personal responsibility for meeting time restraints of these schedules.
- Assists in the evaluation of any persons in charge of departments, the student activities director, and most classified positions assigned for instructional purposes.
Some typical duties and responsibilities relating to guidance and counseling are:
- Assists the principal in planning, implementing, and administering the guidance program and generally monitoring it to insure its effectiveness.
- Supervises the counseling staff, providing information on new rules and policies, conducting training meetings, and personally assisting with exceptional cases, and further supervising testing, attendance services, psychological services, and registration of new students.
- As directed by the principal, maintains liaison with the elementary and high school segments, especially regarding testing scores and guidance information from the elementary schools, orienting all new students, and monitoring the transmission of essential data for pupils promoted to high school.
- Counsels with pupils and parents regarding problems of the pupils.
- Enforces discipline regulations, consistent with Board of Education policies; settles disciplinary referrals; and prepares case data for major disciplinary cases which may lead to suspension or expulsion.
- Conducts conferences with law enforcement, probation, and welfare personnel regarding students.
- Assists in the evaluation of counselors, special education teachers, and classified personnel.
Some other typical duties and responsibilities relating to administration and the general education program are:
- Assumes personal responsibility for the construction of teacher supervision schedules, committee schedules, and personally supervises teachers on duty rosters.
- Assists in and personally directs teachers and students as to conduct and duties in cases of fire and other emergencies, conducting fire drills at least once each month and other emergency drills as required, maintaining written records as to date and time required to complete the drill; further, evaluate the effectiveness of the drills and transmit findings to all staff members concerned.
- Maintains the general direction and control of all student body activities, if applicable.
- Serves on committees; attends conferences and meetings, makes reports as required, and performs other duties as may be specified by the superintendent, assistant superintendents, and the principal.
- Maintains current professional knowledge through professional organizations and professional literature as to current trends, innovative practices, and other changes in educational programs.
- Is familiar with all ongoing duties of the principal and may assume responsibility for the operation of the school in the absence of the principal.
QUALIFICATIONS
Credential: Possession of an administration standard or supervision credential or credential of equivalent authorization issued by the California Commission on Teacher Credentialing is required; and
Education: A bachelor's degree from an approved institution is required. Advanced degrees are preferred; and
Experience: A minimum of five years of certificated experience in public or private schools is required, and preference will be given for experience at a comparable segment level for which appointment is considered. While additional administrative or supervisory experience is not required, preference will be given to persons with additional experience in a school system in an administrative, supervisory, or specialist capacity.
