Brief Description of Position
The Reading Specialist works under the direct supervision of the Director of Curriculum and Instruction, as well as works directly with students, teachers, PLCs, administrators, and all staff to provide tier 3 intervention and expertise in the area of literacy.
Major Duties and Responsibilities
Provide tier 3 instructional support to identified students in reading. Provide whole class and small group instruction in reading. Diagnose reading problems and evaluate reading progress of students. Facilitate grade-level meetings focused on the analysis of formative assessments to guide instruction and to assist grade level teams in setting goals for improved instruction. Support classroom teachers in developing effective instructional practices through the student-centered coaching process. Demonstrate exemplary classroom literacy practice and possess a deep understanding of literacy theory for the purpose of modeling best practices in literacy and improving student achievement levels. Plan and provide staff development sessions that align with the District’s philosophy, instructional goals, and curriculum objectives. Attend Instructional Coaches trainings and meetings.
Qualifications
- Knowledge of the California Standards for the Teaching Profession
- Knowledge of California Standards
- Possess a comprehensive knowledge of reading, writing, and literacy development
- Successful experience teaching reading to at-risk students
- Use of a diagnostic assessment and research-based strategies in a balanced literacy block
- Experience with culturally and linguistically diverse student populations
- Ability to prepare and deliver oral presentations
- Ability to provide effective coaching, staff development and technical feedback
- Ability to provide effective demonstration lessons
- Knowledge of effective instructional practices, research and methodologies
- Knowledge of formative and summative assessment practices
