JOB SUMMARY
Performs a variety of duties associated with academic planning and career guidance for students at various grade levels within the District or for the community education programs; and performs related work as required.
QUALIFICATIONS
Required:
1. Any combination of education, training, and experience equivalent to two years of college, and two years of related experience organizing activities for a school or community program
2. Knowledge of information sources including but not limited to secondary education requirements, college entrance requirements, application procedures, testing, financial aid and scholarship opportunities, state and District educational program requirements, registration procedures, academic and vocational guidance, master scheduling, community referrals.
3. Knowledge of correct English usage, spelling, grammar and punctuation; possess excellent oral and written communication skills.
4. Knowledge of modern office equipment including personal computers/devices and routine clerical procedures; ability to use Microsoft Office and Google Suite for communication and data collection purposes.
5. Ability to perform various information dissemination and clerical with accuracy.
6. Knowledge of and ability to navigate appropriate internet resources.
7. Knowledge and organization of related print materials including pamphlets, brochures, and informational documents.
8. Ability to establish positive relationships and interact with students, teachers, and parents in a courteous, tactful, and business-like manner.
9. Ability to work in a complex environment with many interruptions.
10. Ability to maintain confidentiality of student information; ability to use discretion and good judgment; exercise initiative and assume responsibility.
11. Ability to make contact with members of the community to incorporate their participation in activities of the center.
12. Ability to establish and maintain cooperative working relationships.
13. Valid California driver license.
Desirable:
1. Bachelor’s degree with specific course work in college and career guidance or a related field.
2. Three years of progressively responsible related experiences, some of which includes heavy personal contact responsibilities.
3. One year experience working with secondary or post-secondary age students.
4. Successful experience or post-secondary school educational setting in a capacity relevant to academic advisement.
5. Any combination of training and experience that could likely provide the desired knowledge and abilities.
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS
1. Meets with individual or small groups of students to discuss career information and goals.
2. Collects and organizes information explaining careers and vocational opportunities.
3. Maintains contact with other resources outside the schools to which students can be referred for career information.
4. Coordinates on a routine basis with the site counseling team.
5. Works with teachers to schedule use of the Career Center for classes.
6. Publicizes job and community service opportunities for students.
7. Capable of administering and interpreting Career Aptitude Tests and assessments in coordination with various military branches.
8. Develops and implements school-wide career, exploration events, job shadows, internships and informational interviews with community members.
9. Initiates and helps counselors and certificated staff organize field trips for college and career related activities.
10. Administers career guidance surveys and provides information on careers to students.
11. Uses data management systems to collect and record information for various related programs including community service hours toward graduation requirement.
12. Coordinates with local community colleges for placement tests, orientations, college visits and other school activities.
13. Researches college programs, financial aid and scholarships or grants using online resources and provides this information to students.
14. Orders, receives, maintains, and updates college/career resources, equipment, and computer hardware and software utilized by and residing in assigned Career Center.
15. Assists and advises students as they consider their options in relation to post-secondary training and educational opportunities, to include such considerations as: the armed services, certificate programs, community colleges, trade & technical schools, apprenticeship programs, and four-year colleges and universities.
16. Plans and presents classroom units in career decision-making, research, job research, and job research techniques.
17. Conducts orientation once a year for all classes in the Career Center to demonstrate the resources available for all students.
18. Perform other duties as reasonably related to the position.
PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS
1. Ability to sit for extended periods of time.
2. Ability to stand and circulate for extended periods of time.
3. Ability to see and read fine print and work with small objects with or without vision aids.
4. Ability to hear and understand speech at normal levels with or without aids.
5. Ability to communicate so others will clearly understand normal conversation.
6. Ability to lift/carry/push/pull up to 10 pounds on a regular basis and up to 25 pounds occasionally.
7. Ability to reach in all directions.
8. Physical dexterity in limbs and digits to operate computers.
MENTAL REQUIREMENTS
1. Ability to concentrate on a single task for up to two (2) hours at a time.
2. Ability to learn quickly and adapt to a variety of technology, instructions, and task methods.
3. Ability to meet deadlines in terms of work assignment schedules.
SOCIAL REQUIREMENTS
1. Interact daily in person with other members of the site and school staff and possess comfortable interpersonal skills and cooperative attitudes.
2. Because of the time urgent nature of duties and because work product of position is interdependent with that of other staff, consistent attendance is required.
3. Convey an understanding, patient attitude toward other students, parents, staff and members of community.
4. Maintain the privacy of confidential information including pupil data, staff data, or any other data.
