Job Summary

Job Summary

Under the direction of the Director of Special Education, a Paraprofessional/Aide will assist student(s) with special needs under the direction of a certified teacher. The Paraprofessional/Aide will help in general daily classroom activities, help special needs student(s), care for their physical, emotional health and safety, affirm their abilities, and strive to promote dignity in all relationships. Essential Functions This classification specification does not describe all duties performed by all incumbents. The Paraprofessional/Aide will assist in supervising student(s) during recess times, on the playground, restrooms, or any other place where student(s) gather. The Paraprofessional/Aide may also assist in 1:1 and may perform an array of duties where needed.

Requirements / Qualifications

ESSENTIAL DUTIES: • Assist in classroom control by supervising small groups and/or individual pupils to promote the learning process. • Assist student(s) in achieving academic success. • Work with student(s) who may be aggressive or disruptive in class. • Assist in supervising student(s) at assigned tasks in and out of the classroom. • Assist the teacher in devising special strategies for reinforcing materials or skills based on a sympathetic understanding of individual student(s), their needs, interests, and abilities. • May supervise yard and community-based activities or attend field trips. • Behavior support, which includes physical management (training provided). • Consultation and collaboration with Special Education and related service staff, as well as School Administrators. • Assist in the observation and recording of student(s) development and progress. • Performs other related duties as required.

Knowledge of & Ability to: • Safety rules in campus activities. • Human relation skills. • Exercise patience when conveying information and demonstrate sensitivity to all students. • Maintain a safe and orderly environment. • Develop and implement curriculum. • District and school policies related to conduct, safety, and welfare of pupils in assigned areas. • Health and Safety regulations, including basic first aid. • Effective communication both orally and in written form. • Work with behaviorally disordered children. • Ensure student compliance with school and organizational policies and regulations. • Establish and maintain cooperative and effective working relationships with others. • Understand and follow oral and written instructions. • Demonstrate patience and a receptive attitude towards children. • Determine appropriate action within clearly defined guidelines. • Communicate effectively with parents in a sensitive manner. • Maintain confidentiality. • Sufficient physical ability to reach in all directions with arms. • Read, interpret, and apply rules, regulations, policies, and procedures.

A. degree (or higher), or Pass a local assessment of knowledge and skills in assisting in instruction. (This is a locally approved assessment. Local educational agencies may develop their own assessment or use an existing assessment so long as it measures the knowledge and skills in assisting in instruction. Many districts use the CBEST for this purpose). Minimum of one (1) year experience in providing various methods of instruction, including direct instruction, preferably in the education environment. Experience in a regular or special education classroom. Bachelor’s degree or higher from an accredited college or university. (Desirable but not required.) Advanced education/coursework and/or training in the implementation of instructional methodologies, child development, student assessment, etc. (Desirable). CONDITIONS OF EMPLOYMENT: Employment is contingent upon fingerprint and background clearance, and tuberculosis test clearance
