Brief Description of Position Under direction of site administrator and Director of Educational Services, or designees, works with and serves as a resource to elementary school students, school staff, and parents; provides comprehensive social-emotional and behavioral support services that enhance school climate and optimize the learning and social-emotional competencies of all students; provides prevention and intervention activities at classroom, small group, individual, and family levels; works collaboratively with other support services and community resources. Major Duties and Responsibilities a. Provide short-term small group and individual counseling to elementary school students. b. Plan, Facilitate, implement and evaluate social-emotional learning activities and lessons in classrooms. c. Collaborate with school psychologist, guidance aides, teachers, and administrators to develop school-wide efforts to enhance school climate, build positive behavior supports, and develop student resiliency and protective factors in the school community. Activities may include but not limited to: i Planning and facilitating school assemblies related to guidance concerns and behavior supports. ii Providing positive activities during non-instructional periods. iii Conducting student/staff/parent surveys. d. Assist in the arrangement and facilitation of necessary conferences with students, parents and teachers. e. Provide consultation, coaching, and parent education opportunities to parents. f. Participate in development and implementation of student behavior support plans. g. Provide immediate crisis intervention services. h. Refer students and parents to appropriate social agencies when needed. i. Consult with teachers, administrators and other support personnel relative to counseling and student support. j. Participate as a member of the site Student Study Team, site guidance teams, and Professional Learning Communities. k. Participate in District Support Services teams. l. Participate in training opportunities as directed, and seek professional development opportunities for self and team. m. Facilitate evaluation of program services. n. Maintain appropriate confidential records. Other Duties and Responsibilities a. Complete and present reports regarding student support needs and interventions. b. Possible translation of site and District materials. c. Consult with junior high school counselors regarding transition of 6th grade students. d. Assist in campus supervision of students as directed by site administrator. e. Other activities as appropriate and assigned by site administrator. Supervision Exercised or Received Under the immediate direction of the site administrator/designee. Supervision hours for MFT and LCSW interns may be offered. POSITION QUALIFICATIONS Minimum Qualifications 1. Credential: A Pupil Personnel Services credential with specialization in School Counseling, School Psychology, or School Social Work. (Or: Any valid credential issued by the State of California authorizing service as a school counselor???) 2. Education: Bachelor's degree, including all courses needed to meet credential requirements. 3. Bilingual skills are preferred (Spanish, Hmong). 4. Personal Qualities: Ability to develop healthy relationships with children, parents, colleagues, and supervisors. Strong communication and organizational skills. A self-starter who functions well with limited supervision. Appearance, grooming, and personality which establish a desirable example for students. Ability to meet District standards for physical and mental health. Better than average recommendations from professionals who have observed the personal characteristics, scholastic attainment, and job performance of the counselor. Must have strong understanding of child development and the needs of children. Competency in use of computers for word processing, data collection, and email communication.
