Description of Position:

 

The Construction Department at Diablo Valley College is seeking qualified instructors to teach apprenticeship courses starting in the Fall 2025 term. Teaching assignments vary depending on student enrollment and the needs of the department each semester. The apprenticeship disciplines may include Plumbing, Steamfitting, Welding or HVACR.

Duties and Responsibilities:

 

Adjunct Faculty duties and responsibilities include but are not limited to:

1. providing instruction in accordance with established curriculum, course outlines and class schedules;

2. creating and maintaining an environment which emphasizes learning, encourages free discussion of ideas and critical thinking;

3. evaluating progress of students concerning educational matters and grades student work;

4. meeting with students outside of class;

5. maintaining appropriate standards of professional conduct and ethics;

6. maintaining current knowledge in the subject matter areas;

7. fulfilling professional responsibilities of a part-time/temporary faculty member;

8. maintaining accurate academic records;

9. performing other related duties as assigned.

 

Minimum Qualification-Education/Experience:

 

The minimum qualifications for service as an apprenticeship instructor teaching community college apprenticeship credit courses that are part of an apprenticeship program approved by the Division of Apprenticeship Standards shall be satisfied by meeting one of the following requirements:

 

(1) Possession of an associate degree, plus four years of occupational experience in the subject matter area to be taught;

OR

 

(2) Six years of occupational experience in the subject matter to be taught, a journeyman's certificate in the subject matter area to be taught, and completion of at least twelve (12) semester units of apprenticeship or college level course work. The twelve (12) semester unit requirement may be satisfied concurrently during the first two years of employment as an apprenticeship instructor. OR (3) Six years of occupational experience in the subject matter to be taught, and a minimum of ten years of experience as an apprenticeship instructor for the California Department of Industrial Relations Division of Apprenticeship Standards.

Desirable Qualifications:

 

Applicants should have excellent skills in communication and experience working with individuals or teams in a collaborative educational environment. Although teaching experience is preferred, applicants with no prior teaching experience but a strong aptitude or interest in teaching are encouraged to apply.
