Job Summary

Nine-month, full-time positions are available for AmeriCorps members to serve as mentors in Kern County schools starting September 2, 2025, and ending May 29, 2026. Applicants must be available to serve site-specific schedules during the term of service. ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS AND RESPONSIBILITIES AS A MENTOR: Under general supervision, to implement the Kern Community Mentoring program by providing the following direct services: • plan structured and meaningful mentor activities • implement one-on-one and small group mentoring • attend regular mentor training provided by program • collaborate with agency staff to monitor mentee progress • serve as a mentor and positive role model to targeted mentees • report weekly on mentee contact logs and other important documents • appraise mentee progress using evaluation instruments provided by program • create and manage a schedule to ensure all mentees receive appropriate hours AS AN AMERICORPS TEAM MEMBER: • as a team, plan, implement and report on service projects to strengthen communities • participate in and reflect on community service experiences • participate in team meetings and other events promoting the AmeriCorps identity • recruit and coordinate community volunteers • participate in ongoing service specific training

Requirements / Qualifications

Applicants must be a U.S. citizen, U.S. national, or lawful permanent resident, and be at least 17 years old. Education equivalent to the completion of the twelfth grade; two years or more of college credits preferred. Experience with direct services for youth and/or community service programs. Competent in reading and math; good oral and written communication skills; good record keeping skills; strong organizational skills; good judgment; demonstrated commitment to public service; ability to appreciate the value and importance of cultural diversity; ability to work with people and organizations with different viewpoints; and ability to work collaboratively with schools, community-based organizations, public agencies, community partners, and other AmeriCorps members. Applicants must provide their own transportation to and from home and the principal service site and locations of trainings, team meetings, and community events. All applicants must be available to serve site specific schedules; some evenings or weekend days may be required. Applicants must agree to provide the necessary documents and information to establish eligibility and to complete a National Service Criminal History Check.
