Job Summary
Under general supervision of the site administrator, and under the direction of the Coordinator of Special Education and District Behavior Support Team. The Behavior Support Assistant supports students with behavioral and emotional challenges by assisting school teams in implementing instructional activities and behavior management strategies. This role involves working closely with students in both individual and group settings to promote academic success, social development, and positive behavior. The assistant supports in the creation and implementation of behavior intervention plans (BIPs), monitors student behavior, provides crisis intervention, and collaborates with the educational team to ensure students' needs are met. By fostering a supportive and structured environment, the behavioral support assistant helps students develop essential academic and social skills while ensuring a safe and productive learning atmosphere.
Requirements / Qualifications
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS: • Prior experience working as an instructional assistant in special education, Student Attendant, or teaching assistant, or in a similar role in an educational setting, preferably with students who have behavioral or emotional challenges. • Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with students and adults, perform a variety of complex tasks, understand and carry out English oral and written instructions, and prepare reports as required. • Knowledge of correct language usage, spelling, grammar, and punctuation. California state law requires that all personnel working in an instructional setting must demonstrate high school proficiency in the areas of reading, writing, and mathematics. Applicants must pass a proficiency examination before they can be considered for a position as an Instructional Assistant. • High school diploma or GED required. Preferably supplemented by two years’ college course work in childcare specialization or equivalent.
In order to apply for this position and to be considered, you must have successfully passed the IA/SA exam. A valid California Driver’s Licenses required at the time of appointment. CPR certification is desirable.
