Job Summary
Under the supervision of the principal, the School Nutrition Program Specialist prepares and serves meals to students in compliance with USDA guidelines, assists students with meal-related tasks, and ensures a safe, clean, and welcoming dining environment. This role also fosters a positive dining experience by engaging students in conversations about the nutritional value of meals and promoting healthy eating habits. Essential Duties and Responsibilities: Meal Preparation and Service Cooks, prepares, and bakes meals in compliance with USDA nutritional guidelines. Cleans, cuts, mixes, and bakes food in a nutritious and tasty manner. Prepares sandwich fillings and assembles sandwiches. Sets up food for serving on counters and steam tables. Serves food to students and staff during meal periods, ensuring proper portion sizes and meal patterns. Loads and unloads cafeteria related items for transport to food service locations. Performs cashier duties and accurately collects and records meal counts and data. Operates kitchen equipment, including ovens, slicers, grills, and mixers. Student Support and Engagement Walks around the dining area during meal periods to assist students with opening food packages, retrieving meal components, and addressing special dietary needs. Engages students in conversations about the nutritional value of their meals, encouraging healthy food choices and fostering an understanding of balanced diets. Supports younger students and those with physical or developmental disabilities in accessing and enjoying their meals. Maintains a positive and welcoming environment for all students during meal service. Sanitation and Maintenance Maintains a clean and organized cafeteria and kitchen environment during and after meal periods. Cleans and sanitizes kitchen equipment, counters, cafeteria tables, and any areas where student meals take place, adhering to California Health Standards. High School Diploma or equivalent.
Possession of a valid California Driver’s License.
Clearance of a tuberculosis (TB) test and criminal justice fingerprint check.
Previous experience in food service, particularly in a school or institutional setting.
Familiarity with USDA meal program regulations and guidelines.
