Job Summary

Under the direction of an assigned supervisor, in cooperation with the site Administrator, perform routine custodial activities at assigned school site or District facility to maintain buildings and adjacent grounds areas in a clean, orderly and secure condition.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES:

  •    Perform routine custodial activities at assigned District sites; sweep, scrub, mop, wax and polish vinyl floors, refinish wood floors and vacuum, spot clean, and extract or bonnet clean rugs and carpets in classrooms, offices, workshops and other work areas. 
  •    Clean restrooms, showers, locker rooms, shops, cafeteria, offices and related facilities as assigned; sweep, mop and clean gymnasium floor; spot mop spills and remove gum and debris. 
  •    Clean and disinfect drinking fountains, sinks, toilets, showers and urinals; fill dispensers with towels, soap, toilet paper, seat covers, and feminine hygiene items; clean mirrors, tile, partitions and windows. 
  •    Clean and remove graffiti from various surfaces; remove and/or paint over as appropriate. 
  •    Clean classrooms, including washing windows and walls; cleaning boards and erasers and emptying pencil sharpeners; assemble furniture; move and arrange furniture, supplies and equipment in preparing classrooms and multi-purpose rooms for special events or meetings. 
  •    Replace light bulbs and lighting tubes; clean, dust and polish furniture and woodwork and make minor, non-technical repairs as needed. 
  •    Lock and unlock doors and gates as appropriate; maintain security of assigned areas according to established guidelines; turn alarm system off in the morning and on in the evenings. 
  •    Unlock and lock locker room facilities to assure security of belongings and facilities; activate automatic shower system or assure manual showers are turned off to conserve water; dust all horizontal surfaces; cut combination locks and perform minor maintenance to lockers as needed. 
  •    Report safety, sanitary and fire hazards to appropriate authority; report need for maintenance repairs to appropriate authority; maintain security of buildings; report suspicious or unauthorized individuals on campus. 
  •    Pick up, sweep, or rake paper, trash and debris around school grounds and in buildings; sweep and clean walkways and entrances; clean debris from hardscape areas; dispose of trash according to established procedures; wash out trash cans and follow established sanitation procedures and standards. 
  •    Operate cleaning equipment such as vacuums, floor machines, auto scrubbers, carpet extractors, pressure washers, manual and power sweepers and power blowers; operate an electric cart, hand truck, or four wheel dolly to transport items around campus; clean tables, chairs and floors after lunch periods as assigned. 
  •    Set up auditorium, gymnasium, multi-purpose room or other areas for classes and events as required; move furniture around campus; set up chairs, tables, bleachers and other facilities for special events and activities; strike set-ups and store chairs and tables; clean up debris following events. 
  •    Respond to emergency cleanups such as spills; maintain records of observed maintenance and repair needs and safety issues. 
  •    Operate a computer at a basic level to maintain certain records, correspond with various District staff via electronic mail and perform other related tasks.  

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:

Knowledge and Skills:  Basic methods, materials, tools and equipment used in custodial work and routine maintenance, including related disinfectants and sanitizers; proper methods of storing equipment, materials and supplies; proper lifting techniques; proper use of basic hand tools, including screwdrivers, pliers, hammers, hand saw, etc.; basic computer skills; communication and interpersonal skills.

Abilities: Ability to perform routine custodial activities at an assigned school site or facility to maintain buildings, locker rooms and adjacent grounds areas in a clean, orderly and secure condition; use cleaning materials, equipment and methods according to pre-determined standards; learn and apply knowledge of the schedules, procedures and use of equipment and supplies used in custodial work; learn appropriate safety precautions and procedures; maintain tools and equipment in clean working order and provide proper security; perform minor non-technical repairs; observe and report need for maintenance and repair; understand and follow oral and written directions; meet schedules and timelines; communicate effectively both orally and in writing; inspect and assure the security of facilities during assigned shift.; operate a computer at a basic level.


EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE:

Any combination equivalent to:  sufficient training and experience to demonstrate the knowledge and abilities listed above and some experience performing routine custodial duties.

LICENSES AND OTHER REQUIREMENTS:

Some positions in this classification may require a valid California driver’s license.

Appropriate certification for use of equipment, materials and/or supplies routinely used to perform duties.

 

WORKING CONDITIONS:

 Environment: Indoor and outdoor environment; regular exposure to fumes, dust and odors, and subject to driving a vehicle to conduct work.

Physical Abilities:  Standing for extended periods of time, bending at the waist, pushing and pulling cleaning equipment, lifting and moving heavy furniture; lifting items weighing up to 60 pounds, climbing ladders and reaching overhead, above the shoulders, and horizontally to replace lights and perform other tasks in high places; dexterity of hands and fingers to operate power equipment and other related equipment.

 Hazards:   Exposure to dust and chemicals such as ammonia and bleach.
