Under supervision of the Dean of Health Professions, teach Vocational Nursing courses in accordance with course descriptions, outlines and class schedules; evaluate progress of students, advise students concerning educational matters, and participate in activities that strengthen student success.  The Vocational Nursing program is a hybrid evening program with face-to-face in person labs.

 

The successful candidate will join a Vocational Nursing department that continues to create curriculum responsive to student needs, increasing student completion through the implementation of strategies geared to increase student equity.  

 

Minimum Qualifications

Any bachelor’s degree and two years of professional experience, or any associate degree and six years of professional experience. At least one-year continuous, full time or its equivalent experience in the designated nursing area within the previous five years as a registered nurse providing direct patient care. Recent experience may include teaching in the area of nursing.

 

(A) Registered Nurse:

1. Hold a current California active license as a Registered Nurse; and

2. Hold a baccalaureate degree from an approved school; or a valid teaching credential; or have completed a minimum of one year full-time teaching experience in a state approved registered nursing or vocational or practical nursing, or psychiatric technician school within the last five years; or met community college or state university teaching requirements in California; and

3. Have a minimum of two years experience as a registered nurse or licensed vocational nurse within the last five years.

 

(B) Licensed Vocational Nurse:

1. Hold a current California active license as a Vocational Nurse; and

2. Hold a baccalaureate degree from an approved school; or a valid teaching credential; or have completed a minimum of one year full-time teaching experience in a state approved registered nursing or vocational or practical nursing, or psychiatric technician school within the last five years; or met community college or state university teaching requirements in California; and

3. Have a minimum of two years experience as a vocational nurse within the last five years.

 

The professional experience required must be directly related to the faculty member’s teaching assignment. This is a hybrid program and applicants must possess an online teaching certificate from a recognized online instruction program such as @ONE 12-Weeek Course (onefortraining.org), the Online Learning Consortium (onlinelearningconsortium.org), or equivalent.

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS

• Education and/or experience in teaching in Vocational Nursing at the community college level, with a particular emphasis in basic skills.

• Current knowledge of Vocational Nursing practices.

• Current understanding of assessment processes for improving student success at the course, program, and degree level.

• Competent in new pedagogies, such as Vocational Nursing practices, and other pedagogies directed at improving student success and student equity.

• Recent experience working with African American/Black, Hispanic, Native American, and other minoritized students in the classroom, and an understanding of how historical patterns of exclusion of these groups within higher education shape patterns of participation and outcomes;

• Willingness to examine and remediate one’s instructional, relational, and classroom practices to more effectively engage and support racially minoritized students;

• Experience and skill with addressing issues of equity in the classroom;

• Experience and expertise in culturally responsive teaching in Vocational Nursing, especially as it relates to the relevancy of students’ lives, interests, and communities; 

• Demonstrated ability to address equity gaps within coursework and the classroom;

• Demonstrated knowledge of the Hispanic-Serving designation for institutional, departmental, and instructional practices.

 

GENERAL JOB DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

• Part of the teaching assignment may be in person, online, in the evening, and/or on Saturdays and Sundays to include off campus assignments. All part-time faculty are expected to participate actively in their disciplines, department activities, and the general intellectual life and governance of the college. Duties and responsibilities include but are not limited to:

• Teach lower division courses and clinical in Vocational Nursing

• Advancing equitable student learning through dedicated, exemplary instruction in accordance with established course outlines. 

• Informing students of course requirements, evaluation procedures, and attendance requirements. 

• Preparing and grading class assignments and examinations and informing students of their academic progress. 

• Implement program philosophy, objectives, policies and curriculum. 

• Supervise student practice of new skills. 

• Assist students with remedial skills practice as needed and communicate progress to Vocational Nursing team. 

• Serve as skills evaluator. 

• Maintain a comprehensive system of records for students in the clinical setting which may include student evaluations, grade book, clinical grids, competency testing, submission of clinical clearance records, positive attendance records, computer training records, semester checklists, etc. 

• Assist with coordinating scheduling of pre and post conference meetings. 

• Provide for orientation of students in preparation for clinical setting 

• Assist with program-related activities 

• Informing students of course requirements, evaluation procedures, and attendance requirements. 

• Preparing and grading class assignments and examinations and informing students of their academic progress. 

• Maintaining attendance, scholastic, and other records and submitting them according to published policies and deadlines. 

• Developing, implementing, and assessing student-learning outcomes for courses and programs and using the results for improvement. 

• Engaging in data inquiry and self-assessment to develop strategies for student success, persistence, and equity. 

• Participating in professional development activities to fulfill mandatory FLEX requirements 

• Maintaining current knowledge in the subject matter area and effective teaching/learning strategies to meet the needs of all learning styles. 

• Maintaining appropriate standards of professional conduct and ethics. 

• Perform other duties as assigned.
