Under supervision of the appropriate administrator and general direction of a classroom teacher, assists the teacher in the instruction and care of students who are severely disabled including management of student behavior; record keeping; instructional assistance; medical care; classroom organization; and interaction and communication with students, support staff, parents and agencies.

WASHINGTON UNIFIED SCHOOL DISTRICT CLASSIFICATION: PARAEDUCATOR I SALARY RANGE: 20 GROUP: STUDENT SERVICES DATE OF ADOPTION/REVISION: 01/22/09 DESCRIPTION: Under direct supervision, provides routine assistance to classroom teacher or preschool/child care teachers by working with students on an individual or group basis in classroom activities. Typical duties will include, but are not limited to, explaining work assignments and administering remedial drill work and tests, monitoring classroom during tests, study periods and emergency absence of teacher, grading tests and homework, supervising students on field trips, assisting in housekeeping and/or child care activities and in daily physical, nutrition and dental routines. Must posses the ability to assist in instructing, reading readiness, writing readiness, and mathematics readiness, as appropriate. Other duties will include correcting papers, recording information on student records, preparing bulletin board displays, requisitioning supplies and the performance of a variety of routine clerical tasks requiring typing skills. Performs other related duties as required. SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS: Incumbents must demonstrate proficiency in basic subjects by passing the District proficiency or equivalent test as approved by the Director of Personnel. Some assignments may require the ability to speak a language other than English. QUALIFICATIONS: Knowledge of: - Child development and behavior of children; - Library materials, procedures and organization; - Basic English and math skills; - First aid and safety practices; - Basic computer input and retrieval methods. AND Ability to: - Monitor student progress, maintain classroom discipline and supervise students; - Type at 35 WPM and perform a variety of general clerical tasks; - Maintain confidentiality of student information and records; - Understand and carry out oral and written instructions; - Establish and maintain cooperative relationships with those contacted during the course of work. AND Training and experience: - Any combination of training and experience which would provide the required knowledge and abilities is qualifying. A typical way to obtain such knowledge and abilities would be: Two years of experience comparable to that of Instructional Aide I, preferably supplemented by advanced training in areas where assigned. Physical Abilities: Requires ambulatory ability to go to different locations. Requires speaking and hearing to communicate in person or over the phone. Requires visual acuity to read words and numbers. Requires lifting of light to moderate objects on an occasional basis and sufficient ambulatory ability to stand for sustained periods of time. Requires sufficient arm, hand, finger dexterity in order to operate a personal computer keyboard, typewriter, and other office equipment. Neck flexion and rotation to read and work on computer. Bends and twists at the waist. Kneels, squats or crouches to work with students and to retrieve and file materials. If working with preschool students: Requires occasional lifting of up to 50 pounds and infrequently lifting on 51 to 90 pounds with assistance.
