PSYCHOLOGIST

QUALIFICATIONS
Required: A valid pupil personnel services credential with special authorization in school psychology.
Desirable: A master's degree, strong background in individual/group counseling, family systems, crisis intervention and chemical dependency intervention; three or more years successful teaching experience in public education.

GENERAL RESPONSIBILITIES
A school psychologist is a credentialed professional whose primary objective is the application of scientific principles of learning and behavior to ameliorate school related problems and to facilitate the learning and development of students in the district. The psychologist is expected to know, and to be responsive to, the educational philosophy and objectives adopted by the Board of Trustees.

MAJOR DUTIES
1. Administers psychological assessments of students for special class placement, educational prescription, periodic reevaluation, and personal counseling. E
2. Consults with school administrators concerning appropriate learning objectives for students and the subsequent planning of developmental and remedial programs for pupils in regular and special school programs. E
3. Consults with teachers in the development and implementation of classroom methods and procedures designed to facilitate pupil learning and to overcome learning and behavior disorders.E
4. Conducts individual and group conferences with students, parents, and staff members to foster personal growth, emotional health, and/or professional competence as needed. E
5. Coordinates parent education program to assist them in understanding the learning and adjustment processes of students. E
6. Makes referrals to and consults with appropriate individuals and agencies in the community needed to perform services beyond the scope of the high school setting. E
7. Serves as a consultant and frequently a coordinator for programs focusing on students with special educational needs, such as learning disabilities, communicative disorders, autism and orthopedic impairments. E
8. Provides crisis intervention support for students at risk of attempting suicide and for other emotionally distraught individuals. E
9. Provides personal counseling for students in individual or group sessions. E
10. Provides direct supervision of interns and field workers in counseling and psychology from institutions of higher learning. E
11. Serves as a liaison with the district office in effecting transfer of students with special needs to other schools or private facilities. E
12. Maintains case study files for children in special education classes and determines that testing for each child is in accordance with current legislation. E
13. Maintains a library and file of professional literature, sample tests, and referral agencies for the use of staff and parents. E
14. Serves on the Guidance Team to identify high risk regular education students. E
15. Consults in the development and coordination of educational projects on the campus as designated by the management team. E
16. Organizes and presents workshops designed to improve the educational program for school and district staff. E
17. Provides teachers with support in behavior management. E
18. Offers counseling and support services to underachieving students, such as high risk, Target GATE identified, and others.
19. Consults with and/or supervises pupil personnel service workers.

WORKING CONDITIONS
Environment: Office environment.

Physical Abilities: Hearing and speaking to communicate with students, parents, and faculty, seeing to observe behavior of students, and sitting for extended periods of time.

Hazards: Incumbents may be exposed to contact with individuals displaying physically aggressive, self-abusive, or socially undesirable behavior; potential exposure to body fluids from students.
