Job Summary

The Special Services Teacher for Deaf and Hard of Hearing, Itinerant, is a certificated employee who is responsible for providing deaf and hard of hearing services to students with established hearing impairment who require such services. Under the direction of the Director(s) of Special Education, the incumbent provides direct instruction, remediation, and assessment to eligible students in District schools and to infants and families in home or group settings.

Major Duties and Responsibilities

  • Assesses and evaluates the communication, cognitive, social, and emotional needs of students with hearing impairments.
  • Provides specialized instruction using Universal Design for Learning (UDL) and bilingual methodologies including American Sign Language (ASL), Signing Exact English (SEE), spoken English, and written English, as appropriate.  
  • Utilizes translanguaging and multimodal instructional strategies (signed, spoken, visual, tactile) to promote access to curriculum. 
  • Develops and implements IEPs/IFSPs with measurable goals across academic, linguistic, social, and behavioral domains.
  • Coordinates and participates in IEP/IFSP meetings, ensuring compliance with all legal timelines. 
  • Supports students access to the Least Restrictive Environment (LRE), in accordance with IDEA. 
  • Provides direct services and consultation to staff regarding accommodations, modifications, and communication access.
  • Monitors and supports language development in expressive and receptive modalities.
  • Collaborates with families, general education teachers, related service providers, administrators, and community agencies and members of the Deaf community. 
  • Implements positive behavior intervention supports (PBIS) and provides explicit instruction in social-emotional and self-advocacy skills. 
  • Maintains accurate service logs, cumulative records, IEPs, progress monitoring, and assessment reports. 
  • Manages assistive technology and hearing equipment, and ensures accessibility accommodations are implemented.
  • Demonstrates knowledge of and respect for Deaf culture, promoting awareness and inclusion.
  • Demonstrates professional behavior and appearance, and maintains current knowledge of evidence-based practices and educational technology tools. 
  • Participates in required staff development, including certification in Pro-ACT or equivalent behavior safety training every two years. 
  • Provides supervision during extracurricular activities and emergency procedures.
