QUALIFICATIONS: 1. High school graduation or equivalent. Any combination of education and experience equivalent to graduation from high school and possession of the knowledge and abilities listed below are considered to possess the necessary education and experience. 2. Type at a speed sufficient to perform the clerical duties required of the position. 3. Possession of a valid and appropriate California Driver's License; have an acceptable driving record and qualify for insurability by the District's insurance carrier. 4. Possession of a standard First Aid Certificate. 5. Possession of a current Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation Certificate. 6. May be required to furnish an automobile during working hours and be willing to drive in the performance of assigned duties. 7. Knowledge of: • Techniques, practices, and procedures for administering first aid. • Common communicable diseases, their care and treatment. • Basic principles and procedures of general and common health care practices. • School health office procedures including general clerical skills and use of common office machines. • Medical terminology. 8. Ability to: • Lift up to 45 lbs. • Analyze situations and initiate an appropriate course of action. • Learn and apply policies and procedures of the District's pupil health program. • Prepare and maintain accurate and complete health records and reports. • Understand and follow oral and written directions. • Establish and maintain effective relations with those contacted in the course of work. • Read and write at a level sufficient to successfully perform the required duties. REPORTS TO AND EVALUATED BY: Director of Student Services with support from Site Administrator and School Nurse. JOB GOAL: Under general supervision, to assist the school nurse in caring for the health needs of students; to provide clerical assistance in maintaining health records and files; and to do other related work as may be required. ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS AND RESPONSIBILITIES: 1. Administer routine first aid. 2. Screen students for injuries and complaints of illness or injury, make a determination of course of action which might include involving the school nurse, administer first aid, notify a parent or guardian to take student home or personally transport students to their home. 3. Assist the school nurse with setting up and conducting health screenings and tests such as for vision, dental and hearing and perform necessary follow up. 4. Follow up on required immunizations through letters, telephone, and personal contact with parents and maintain related records. 5. Establish or review student health cards for health information, record and up-date information and data records. 6. Review health files - vision and hearing - for IEPs. 7. Dispense medication as authorized by physician and maintain security for such medications. 8. Assist in identification of needy students and families and refer to various community assistance programs for services such as glasses, dental care, and food and for clothing. 9. Requisition office and medical supplies. 10. Maintain health office facilities and equipment in a clean and sanitary manner. 11. Check and stock emergency first aid kits in school health office and at other school locations. 12. Prepare and maintain health office bulletin boards. 13. Assist staff in disaster preparedness plans. 14. Oversee office and student aide during lunch period. 15. Assist in training of newly employed health aides with school nurse.
