Distinguishing Characteristics

The ideal candidate for this position is an equity-minded individual who understands the importance of creating opportunities for students who have been historically underserved, particularly in the Latinx community. Gavilan seeks candidates who view the elimination of inequities as an individual and collective responsibility and who strive to reframe inequities as a problem of practice. The ideal candidate demonstrates a commitment to student-centered counseling practices, effective cross campus collaboration, transparent decision-making, and purposeful service to the community and embraces the role of an educator who is continually learning anti-racist pedagogy and adapting to the needs of a diverse student population.

The ideal candidate will possess a Master's degree in Library and Information Science with expertise in reference services, a passion for implementing innovative library technologies, and the ability to work effectively with our diverse student population to enhance access to resources. This position requires excellence in information literacy instruction, a collaborative approach to integrating research skills into curricula, and the ability to support open educational resource initiatives while providing both in-person and virtual assistance. We seek a forward-thinking, inclusive professional committed to fostering student success in our ever-evolving digital information landscape, with the flexibility to adapt services to emerging needs across our transfer, general education, and vocational programs.

Essential Duties

• Coordinates the selection, organization, and maintenance of print and digital reference resources.

• Provides reference and research assistance for students, faculty, staff, and the community, both in-person and through virtual platforms (e.g., chat, email, video), including troubleshooting access issues and conducting thorough reference interviews.

• Develops and delivers information literacy instruction and library orientation sessions.

• Collaborates with faculty to integrate research skills into course curricula through embedded librarian programs and teaching library courses.

• Serves as liaison to academic departments, offering specialized library support for discipline-specific research and instruction needs.

• Creates and maintains online research guides, tutorials, and instructional materials to support student learning and improve access to library resources.

• Participates in collection development, including the evaluation, selection, and assessment of print and electronic resources. Responsibilities include analyzing usage data, identifying gaps in the collection, assessing the relevance and currency of materials, and collaborating with faculty to ensure resources align with instructional goals and student learning outcomes.

• Provides leadership in the implementation and maintenance of library technologies, the library website, the library services platform (LSP), and digital resources to ensure accessibility and usability for all students.

• Supports campus Zero Textbook Cost (ZTC) and Open Educational Resources (OER) initiatives by collaborating with faculty to identify, curate, and promote OER materials, assisting with OER integration into courses, and providing guidance and workshops on open resources for teaching and learning.

• Participates actively in outreach activities to promote library services across the campus community.

• Assists in the general daily operations of the library, including circulation duties and ensuring consistent provision of services.

• Participates in department and college committees, consortia meetings, and collaborates on administrative and compliance tasks such as program review, accreditation, and required state and federal reporting.

• Participate in the development and assessment of Student Learning Outcomes for library programs and services.

• Fosters and promotes the library as an equitable, inclusive, and student-centered space.

• Stays current with innovative trends, emerging technologies, and best practices in library services.

• Manages and preserves archival collections, ensuring proper organization, access, and long-term preservation. Provides reference services and supports digitization efforts for archival materials.

• Serves as the ‘on-duty librarian' when assigned, acting as the first-contact point person in the absence of the Head Librarian to ensure continuity of operations, address issues as they arise, and maintain high-quality, consistent daily services, including staff and facility oversight as needed.

• May assume the duties and responsibilities of the Head Librarian, including providing leadership and coordination of library operations, staff, and services, to ensure the effective and consistent functioning of the library.

• Works a 35-hour week, which may include evening and weekend hours.
