The San Diego County Office of Education is recruiting to add to the substitute pool for the position of Preschool Instructional Assistants

Under general supervision of the Preschool Teacher, the Preschool Instructional Assistant assists in the supervision, care and instruction of children ages birth to age 5, and assists in preparing and organizing preschool activities and materials in the State funded infant-toddler or Preschool Program. This position will assist program staff in setting up the learning and development environment, participate in planning of small group and individual activities, and prepare and assist children in the use of learning and developmentally appropriate materials in all Developmental Domains areas as specified by California Department of Education for infants, toddlers and preschoolers.

This position requires ALL of the following:

  • Valid First Aid and CPR (Infant/Child/Adult) certification as issued by an American Red Cross or an American Heart Association-approved program
  • Completion of mandated reporter training per AB 1207 (administered by SDCOE if selected)
  • Proof of required immunizations, including measles and pertussis vaccinations. Position requires annual influenza shot or 'opt out' statement.*
  • Valid California Driver’s License*
  • Child Development Assistant or Associate Permit with 3 units in infant care is highly desirable


A typical qualifying background would be a combination of completion of high school or equivalent and a minimum of six (6) semester units or equivalent quarter units of post-secondary child development or early childhood education course work from an accredited college or university; and, experience (paid or volunteer) working in a licensed child care facility serving children ages birth to five.

To be considered for this position, you must individually attach the following items to your completed EDJOIN Application:

  • Resume, detailing education and experience
  • Copy of valid CPR certification as issued by an American Red Cross or an American Heart Association-approved program
  • Copy of transcripts showing minimum of six (6) semester units or equivalent quarter units of post-secondary child development or early childhood education course work from an accredited college or university which may include 3 units in infant care
  • Copy of permit, license or certificates you would like to be considered

It is important to note to become a substitute/limited-term employee, there will be a fingerprinting requirement that currently costs up to $77 (this is an up-front, out-of-pocket cost) if processed using SDCOE fingerprinting services. In addition, if you apply and are selected for a permanent position at any point there would be an additional cost up to $77 (currently) for fingerprinting as a permanent employee (taken out of your first regular paycheck). Fingerprints can be paid in the form of a money order, cashier's check, or debit/credit card. If paid by card, you may incur a card processing fee.
