Special Education - Resource Specialist

Brief Description of Position

Assists in identifying and diagnosing handicapped students; provides service to the child and his teacher to enable successful functioning in the least restrictive alternative.

Major Duties and Responsibilities

1. Participate as a member of the Team (IEP) in coordinating the referral and processing
required to determine the student’s educational needs and placement.
2. Act as a resource to the school staff in their areas of expertise, i.e. assessment,
remediation of basic skills, etc., as requested by the school being served.
3. Develop and update the Individual Education Plans (IEP’s) of students placed in the
Resource Specialist Program.
4. Assist the on-site administrator and staff in the development of new and innovative programs, in-services, workshops, etc., to assist in meeting the needs of pupils with exceptional needs in the regular classroom.
5. Provide remedial instruction as prescribed in the written instructional plan for those
pupils identified as having learning handicaps. Such instruction for a particular pupil shall be for less than half the school day.
6. Help coordinate efforts to appropriately involve parents in IEP proceedings and in the
implementation of the IEP.
7. Responsible for supervision and training of Resource Specialist Aide.
8. Perform other related duties as assigned.
